Smiley Face International Kill Spree Underway?

Smiley Pandemic No Laughing Matter

Thomas Ducroo: On February 5th 2011, Thomas Ducroo, 26, was walking home from an evening out on the town when he vanished without a trace. The extensive search for the charismatic young man by family, friends and local police produced no clues until, finally, his body was discovered by tactical divers in the channel on February 23rd 2011. Where did Thomas Ducroo disappear from and drown? The city of Lille, France.
Austin Bice: On February 26th 2011, popular grad student Austin Bice, 22, suddenly disappeared after being denied entry to a busy downtown nightclub by one of its doormen. Bice, who at six-foot-five and 230 pounds was described as a "gentle giant" and extremely athletic, had accompanied five friends to the bar, all of whom said he wasn't that intoxicated. Bice's drowned corpse was discovered at the bottom of the nearby river eleven days later. Officials said he was inebriated, fell into the water, and had a heart attack as he accidentally drowned. Where did Austin Bice vanish from? Madrid, Spain.
Paul Bunbury: On March 13th 2012, the badly decomposed corpse of Paul Bunbury, 19, was discovered floating in the river near a downtown dock, almost six weeks after the university student had mysteriously gone missing. Bunbury, who was last seen on campus sometime around midday on February 2, 2012, was described as being five-foot-ten, 160 pounds, with brown eyes, long brown hair, and a beard. A popular student, his schoolmates launched a major search and internet campaign to find him. Where did Paul Bunbury disappear from and "accidentally" drown? Dublin, Ireland.

Paul Foster: On January 10th 2010, 28-year-old Paul Michael Foster and his truck mysteriously disappeared en route to a movie that evening. He was eventually discovered missing by neighbors because his dog, to whom he was devoted, had begun howling after enduring three days of his master's absence. Nine months later, at the beginning of September, tactical divers on an unrelated mission spotted Foster's truck rusting away in Hamilton Harbor. His remains were found inside of it. Officials emphatically stated there was "no sign of foul play" evidenced in autopsy, and "no reason to believe" that the young man wasn't in the water the entire time he was missing. Where did Paul Foster disappear and drown? Ontario, Canada.

Michael Jansson: On the night of March 9th 2001, dapper "Mikey" Jansson, age 21, was visiting the Biology Bar with a small group of friends when he was abruptly ejected from the establishment by bouncers. Shortly after that event both Jansson and the black Buick Sabre he was alleged to have been driving vanished without a trace. His cellphone, however, was retained for the personal use of various members of Biology's security team, until they disposed of it someplace where it was never to be found again. Partly due to the city police department's initial reluctance to search for him, Jansson himself was never found either. However, on December 15th 2012, over a decade after he was first reported missing, the fender of the young man's car was sighted in the nearby river...and inside the muddy vehicle was a human skeleton. Authorities are now awaiting the results of DNA tests on those bones before formally announcing that they belong to Jansson. Where did this luckless young man disappear from and presumably drown? Chicago, Illinois.
"Hopefully he's alive," says the distraught father of 18-year-old college student Souvik Pal, missing now since January 1, 2013 when he was ejected at 11:00 PM from a nightclub during New Year's eve celebrations. Souvik's friends who were also at the popular Warehouse Project club say that, typically, the young man wasn't drinking very much, so they can't understand why security would have targeted him. Police have been searching all the nearby waterways, but so far he isn't in any of them. Where did Souvik Pal mysteriously disappear from? Manchester, United Kingdom. Will he too be found drowned?  *UPDATE: on January 22nd 2013, Souvik Pal was found dead in a canal near Old Trafford stadium in Manchester UK, a short distance from the nightclub where he was last seen after bouncers separated him from his friends. Outdoor surveillance video showed the student attempting to return to the premises immediately after being thrown out by security for a misunderstanding concerning the location of the bathrooms. Autopsy could not determine the cause or manner of death as Pal was evidently not intoxicated. It isn't clear if the club's bouncers responsible for this event were ever questioned by police, or are even still in town. *The tip for this status report was provided by reader 'Tuned_In'  (Thanks, mate.)

  1. I wonder if there is anyway to check flights around each time? What's your opinions on this? Would it be feasible for international killings now?

  2. Most definitely these newer foreign cases match Smiley's M.O., as does the victim class.

Having said that, IMHO, this also makes it clear that a serial killer or even a gang of serial killers is improbable--they can't be in two, three, four, different countries on the same night. Not to mention that the FBI is quite right in ruling out serial murder (in the past) concerning these patterned disappearances and *drownings* of young men.

Why do I agree with the FBI's findings on that specific point? Because it's true: serial killers don't operate in teams since mentally they're VERY impaired individuals and as such simply not psychologically fit to organize in that way. Plus, they'd be at each other's throats in no time!

I do think the FBI should revisit these deaths, however. These have become predictable, they are now escalating, and the evidence amassed in over 200+ killings strongly shows the most likely perpetrators...

  3. Could it be a copycat? These killings have been so out of the norm since the beginning and the killer seems to have just been making fun with the smiley faces etc. So what about someone who may have a friend with them that wants to throw people off the tracks of the real killer or something? I know a lot of people say serial killers don't work in groups but Robert Little and Larry Eyler did,and thats all I have at the top of my mind right now without some coffee this morning.

  4. Have to agree that it may not be a group for the most part. It was claimed victims were killed the same day. I do not know where they came up with that. Maybe this was from a source the detectives had, that meant same day,but different years Also you have to consider if you kill in the early morning hours, you have plenty of time to travel to a different state. A gang however may have intentionally tried to kill the Hvalty brothers and also you have to consider copycats since the serial killer rumors have been around a long time. They should release the footage of myers who also may have been chased because any one could have put his hat and coat on and walked in front of the cameras alone just to mess with LE. I know with other cases the parents say the person on the video is not their son.

  5. The copycat would be a perfect scapegoat to be honest. I'm originally from Indiana where Scott Javins and Gerald Smith and Chris Thiem were all found in water after partying and came up missing. Well Chris was found in a field after water washed him up, but he had been in water for awhile. But anyways I have grown up in that area all my life. It's always been a known fact that getting rid of a body is perfect with the water so near by. I know that sounds nuts, but I have heard many of people say the wabash is a body dump. Multiple murder victims have been found in the Wabash. So if I was going to kill someone (mind you that I no longer live in Indiana any longer LOL) the Wabash river would be perfect. Drown the guy and or kill them and throw them in and paint a smiley face and guess what the smiley face killer did it in people's mind and in the cops minds no one did it, it was an accident. Or at least that is how the scenario seems to end up looking like. A copycat would be the perfect way to hide a murder. I'm just a criminal justice student with a ton of reading on subjects like this in my background and love for mysteries, murders and the like. so I don't have profession backing me up much, but something is wiggy about all these cases, there is just too many to discount a serial killer I would think. There probably is the occasional suicide or accident or murder by bouncer, cop or ex or whatever, but seriously this many can't be a conincidence I wouldn't think. As for the Javins family I have worked with them he was found in water 5 years after he went missing, I really thought he fit the mo, but he was found in his car to be honest the more I think about it I don't think he fits, plus working on the documentary on him we came up with a lot of things that weren't looked into and answers that went unanswered until we researched the case. I have an idea on this case, but I can't do much with the case being closed and no one to talk to about it, the cops refuse and the prosecuting attorney refuses so cooperation is at a nilch until; I finally just stopped working on the case when the producer nilched the documentary. But in my heart I really think I have the answer. I honestly think it was set up to be looked at like the smiley face killer mo.

  6. Scott Javins seems to be smiley related. Imo anyway. Look into the details. I would love to be privvy to the info you must know since working on the documentary. Wish a celebratory would take notice and bring attention

  9. Anonymous No I really thought Javin's case was Smiley Face related also, but its not. Once I got to a point where I was getting answers and I was uncovering some lies that had been told and started filling in blanks on the case we started getting backlash, uncooperation, more lies and a certain someone took it upon themselves to try to sabotage the documentary. I realized no way was the Javin's case a Smiley Face case. The mo doesn't fit after going over the actual details and with what I found out. I really think the Smiley Face mo was a cover up to hide the real killer, I think you would to if you found out the stuff I had found out. Most of the stories I heard and the details online and newspaper articles are quite fabricated. Yes he went to a party he was drinking and he went missing and he was found in water and that is the same mo until you get deeper and its not the same mo. I am not privy to share the information I have found, the case is going to be requested to be reopened as far as I know. The documentary is canceled as of now.

  10. @ Anonymous 17th "Please I beg...I would love to speak with you. She has done a good stats list on http://justice4eric.com..."

I visited there--she did an excellent job--can you tell me if police made any effort to determine who the mystery caller was who left messages confessing he'd killed Eric and "hid the body"...?

Also, Eric Bowman looks a youthful 39-year-old, so I will shortly add his profile to this site since he did disappear in Portland OR under circumstances identical with most of the other Smiley Face victims. And because, of course, he was later found drowned with very little alcohol in his system.

Looks like, from studying your friend's research on www.justice4eric.com, that it might be its own individual cluster on your coast. I say that because the average age of all these missing/drowned men in the Portland region seems to be in the late thirties, which is a bit higher than the Smiley Face victimology has ever been.

    Worth watching--thanks for the tip!

    1. Eric's best friend, received the mystery text....he took the phone to the police...they did nothing...nothing!!!!!! The text was very evil...something like "the dolls are all lined up,he is dead,we hid the body" They were not allowed to view eric, his photo's only...his tats were pristine looking...he looked like he had just been placed in the Willamette.A few other odd things, she lost her wallet a year prior to eric's death, shortly after, she received her drivers license in an envelope in the mail, with no return address, than, she received a text from an unknown number, stating"hey,I met you at the candle light lounge, want to meet up there tonight" That bar was closed down at the time she received text, also, she was walking her dog one night, someone in the woods was flashing pictures of her...The story get's weirder by the month. The med examiner said to her,"I do not know what to rule this,he has only a trace amount of water in his lungs,I am going to have to rule it "no foul play" The smiley face detectives contacted her,she was to distraught to speak,I spoke to detective Gannon,I think his name is,he said he knew for sure there was a group in portland, but, said, the age doesn't meet the profile. I say BS. Age,obviously doesnt matter in portland. I want to blow the whistle on this, how do we do it? why why why are to cops, med examiner's,etc...covering things up? Do you know? I do not get it. Lisa has stopped living, she had no closure, she lost faith in any and all powers that are suppose to protect and serve. This should be taken to the streets. I say, every family, from every state, affected by this, needs to get together, and take it to the streets, protest, picket, enuff is enuff. Our intelligence has been insulted enough!

  13. @ Anonymous - regarding Eric Bowman:

I am intrigued by this case. Would you and Eric's sister/family be interested in an weblog-style interview to be included in my VOICES FOR THE DEAD feature? (Use the menu bar above to find that page. Use the 'contact the author' link on the side panel, if yes.)

Again, as I have said, and as Detective Gannon has also opined, Eric is slightly older than the established victimology for these Smiley Face killings. BUT with his tattoos and youthful features there exists a good possibility he might've been mistaken for a younger male. Everything else surrounding his disappearance and 'drowning' is identical to Smiley's known M.O.

So check out the interviews I've already conducted with similar victim families and then let me know if you are all up to such a comprehensive Q&A yourselves. I also recommend browsing this site extensively--there is a lot of valuable data here that I have painstakingly collected to shed light on the Case Of the Drowning Men.

In the interim, I want to express my condolences for your terrible loss. I don't have an army, or even a platoon, but with a quill and keyboard I am nevertheless committed to somehow help bring about an end to all this slaughter.

  16. Today: Souvik Pal, the Indian university student missing since New Year’s eve, has been found dead in a canal near Old Trafford stadium in Manchester—not far from the nightclub where he was last seen after being separated from his friends.

From January 9th: The CCTV footage from the club had yielded no clues about his movements afterwards. Police divers combed the Bridgewater Canal near the club in the following days and would resume their search if new information emerged.

  18. @ Anonymous January 24th, QUOTE: "pox, I spoke with my friend, she wants to talk...How do you want to do this?"

Ha--I'm sure Smiley would agree that I'm a "pox" (people who know me better than that though just call me 'Roxy')!

Regarding the Eric Bowman disappearance and drowning, and arranging a Q&A: Have his sister contact me via the CONTACT THE AUTHOR link which she can find by scrolling down the right side panel on this weblog.

Also, tell her to read the VOICES FOR THE DEAD interviews currently posted there, so she has a good idea of the type of questions I'll be asking her and the kind of evidence I'd like her to submit, if possible.

As they're added, each interview will be different, of course, because the events of each case vary slightly as does the age, personalities and activities of the victim. But there are basic themes that unite all of their deaths and, accordingly, a set of similar inquiries I will always be making in each of them.

I look forward to discussing Eric's case with his sister/family; hopefully we can shed light on what happened to him the night he vanished and inch ever forward to the day when his perp (or perps) is apprehended.

    Persistence pays.
