MISSING IN KANSAS: Brad Cook

BREAKING NEWS: Police say body found in De Soto, Kansas this week is missing man Brad Cook:

Cook, 22 from neighboring Olathe Kansas, mysteriously disappeared late in the evening of October 20th 2013, leaving behind his cellphone, wallet and a prized motorbike. He has not been seen or heard from since.

Brad Cook missing
The avid cyclist is the proud owner of a valuable Harley-Davidson, and friends and family say it's highly unlike him to have abandoned it anywhere, let alone outdoors unlocked for an extended period of time.

It's also unusual for the young man to be out of contact with them for so long.

Brad Cook, who shares a home with his sister, left their house abruptly on bike at 10:10 PM October 20th and then inexplicably vanished.

The sister says there were no messages or texts registering on his phone which might explain where he was headed in such a hurry.

The motorcycle was later found parked near a town tavern, but surveillance video from that establishment didn't capture any images of Cook entering or exiting.

There's been no banking activity since that night either, and his family has no idea now what happened to their loved one. They say the business student wasn't depressed and that none of his guns are missing.

Adding to the puzzling disappearance, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the body discovered by a passerby in the area of 95th and Lexington in De Soto on the 29th is in fact Brad Cook.

They insist no foul play was involved in either his death or disappearance.

Police classified the event as an “unattended death” and withheld Cook’s identity pending an autopsy and notification of the family.

A second corpse of a young male, found the next day approximately two miles from Cook's, has not been identified yet. Police claim that particular death does seem "suspicious" and continue to investigate.

  1. UPDATE #1 at 11:25 PM: Police have informed the family of Brad Cook that the clothing of the deceased male discovered in De Soto earlier in the day matches the description of those worn by their loved one when he went missing.

No other details, including a cause of death, will be released until the preliminary autopsy has been performed.

The body was discovered late this afternoon by a passerby just outside the perimeter of the official search area and not far from where Cook's motorcycle was eventually recovered.

More updates will be added here as they come in and are verified.

    1. Kansas hot spot confirmed -- thanks for posting -- police were called to the scene of a burning body in De Soto on September 8th this year. The online news site 'De Soto Edge' reported the incident:

"The Johnson County Sheriff's Office, responding early Sunday morning to a call about a brush fire at 183rd Street and Clare Road, discovered a dead body inside a burning call. The body was found inside a burning car just east of Gardner, Kan. Law enforcement officials were dispatched at around 6 a.m. to the area. It's unknown who the victim was and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case. The area has been coned off as a crime scene and law enforcement remained in the area as of 9 a.m."

  6. UPDATE #3 at 7:45 AM 10/31: With yesterday's discovery of a second body in De Soto, that of another young man in his twenties, police are trying to assure residents that the two untimely deaths are "not connected."

Autopsy results and a formal ID on the first victim has been slightly delayed as a result, although he is believed to be missing biker Brad Cook.

It is not known yet who the other deceased male may be, or his circumstances, but authorities were seen towing two vehicles away from the scene -- one an SUV the other a yellow sports car.

  7. Read about this case here. GA has had like 5 victims in recent months. This is startling. Many victims on phone when attacked only to never to be seen alive again recently. All Males are in Danger in USA. Operation underway to kill as many as possible. Not a Joke. Google it.

  8. I also believe this Group is getting sloppy. Different Chapters across country. In the above story, Car was hit. There has to be Witnesses of what type of car hit the vehicle. Police need to be looking for witnesses on road at that time. Many crimes about victims I have read in past year in articles that have mentioned TWO people working together to attack victims.

  9. UPDATE #4 at 6:21 PM 10/31/2013: Police confirmed today that the body of a male found on October 29th in De Soto Kansas is that of missing man Brad Cook, adding they don't suspect foul play in his disappearance and death. Second body has not yet been identified.

  11. UPDATE #5 at 1:00 PM on 11/2/2013: Police have identified the second young man found dead in De Soto Kansas as Jordan McDonald who disappeared from work this week.

Unlike the case of Brad Cook, McDonald's death was immediately labeled suspicious and an arrest quickly followed the discovery of his remains.

A 31-year-old man is now in custody: Dustin Maynard has been charged with murder.

The bodies of McDonald, 23, and Cook, 22, were found only days apart of each other, right around Halloween, but the spooky coincidence doesn't end there -- Jordan McDonald was a cook at a local restaurant...

    1. I am baffled.. How does someone just die and end up on the side of the road and there is no foul play involved.... He was not depressed, the circumstances do not lend themselves to suicide... So what then?? Please tell me...

      Delete
    2. This is what he know for certain:

      1. Brad left home but left both his licence or wallet in his room

      2. 10 minutes later he parked his motorcycle without bothering to secure it

      3. He walked a mile and a half to the spot where he was eventually found deceased

      4. Law enforcement said no foul play was involved and no accident was reported

      5. If he died as a result of foul play or an accident, the law requires it to become public record

      So what does that leave?

Common sense dictates that after Brad's case gained national attention, the reason for his demise would be made public unless the circumstances are too painful for the family to discuss.

This is probably a good spot to mention that Brad was a gun enthusiast and had a personal collection of them.

      Draw your own conclusions.

      Delete
    3. If Brad met someone at that location and got into their car it would explain why he didn't lock it. Maybe he didn't walk down the road but was in someone else's vehicle. The video of him that 10 minutes later is very grainy and it will take time to enhance it even if they can. But they admit that they are not sure it is actually him parking it.

      Delete
    4. also it was stated before that none of brads guns were missing. I still do believe that this was suicide.

      Delete
    5. Yes, I think it was too. None of the guns from his private collection was missing, but that doesn't mean he didn't carry an everyday gun with him for personal protection that he didn't store with his collection.

  15. Isn't it possible Dustin Maynard could be affiliated with this group and also killed Brad? 2miles form the other body is too easy. The other KS murders? Where was he the nights the other victims in recent weeks disappeared?

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Anonymous 5:12 PM, no. Law enforcement has made clear that the two cases are not related, and there was no criminal activity involved in Brad Cook's death. Likewise, nothing has been reported about Brad suffering an accidental death of some sort.

What we do know about Brad's death does leave a lot of nagging unanswered questions to be sure though. If we never hear anything further about it, I think it's safe to assume Anonymous 10:18 AM is correct.

  17. In the case of Brad Cook (his service was today) RIP. His Sister stated that she started looking for him 20 minutes after he left their home. Within one week his family organized effectively using the media and facebook, with the site "Bring Brad Cook Home" In the end there have been literally thousands following this story. If I ever go missing I want these people looking for me. I firmly believe that if there was ANY question of foul play they would be on it like a duck on a June bug. Out of respect to the family law enforcement gives them a lot more latitude as to how things are reported to the press.

  18. In the case of Jordan MacDonald, this Dustin Maynard asked him for a ride home after celebrating his birthday at JT's Grill where Jordan was just getting off work. It was raining that night and Maynard only lived across the road. Maynard told authorities that he dropped him off at home, then left. Which his car was still in the parking lot the next morning and his body in a field not far from it lying face down when found. After Jo Co Sheriff Dept and Crime Lab ran the findings from the search of his apartment they arrested him for First Degree Murder. His charges have him with a $1M bond even after first appearance, which tells me they got the goods on this guy. And I truly hope so. A 21 year old kid who's father is the co-owner of the establishment and has his whole life ahead of him snuffed out just like that! Please follow up with me to make sure he gets Justice.

  20. I don't believe Brad committed Suicide. It would be reported that he did. He was murdered. SO many cases like this where the victims car, bikes, motorcycles are put someplace. NO such things as a coincidence. There was a reason Brad Body was found within 2 Miles of another. Don't be naive.

    1. If a suicide would be reported, then why wouldn't a murder?

You are in effect accusing the police department, coroner, undertaker, and Brad's family of engaging in a group conspiracy to cover up a murder.

You know all about being naïve. I'll give you that.

    2. How many Bodies across USA have been found like Brad went missing? Lots. Police make many excuses for the Volume of murders of young men in America. Family is in pain and has no answers.Police don't think it is possible for a Group to murder so many people. Death Report always come back as accident or unknown. So victims have marks from assault. NOT all victims put into water. Some put into cars and pushed into rivers, Some left dead in cars, or never are seen again. I am curious how long his body had been outside or how long he had been dead. Was he held like so many other victims? If it was a gunshot suicide, it would be reported like that. Brad was abducted and the closeness of the 2nd body is not a coincidence. That is the 1st rule of being a murder detective. Dustin is probably connected to group that has committed so many of these murders in KS. Think about it. something very evil across USA going on. Be Safe.

    3. I agree 100%. If he had taken his life, he would have taken his wallet with him. If you think about this.....lots of holes in the report from police. Such a sad story no less!

  21. It does not have to be reported to anyone publicly in the case of a suicide. It is not a public safety concern. Not to be graphic here but Brad disappeared Oct. 20, 2013. His remains were found on the 29th. They obviously had been out in the elements all that time. In a fairly remote sparsely populated area. It would be difficult to make an identification quickly possible. An "unattended death" that is not changed after autopsy and "no foul play" indicated, leaves the family to disclose or not disclose information at their discretion. Kansas does not have public access to Death Certificates for that very reason.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well said. If the cause of death is a homicide or due to an accident, by law the public record would have to reflect that. Beyond that including suicide, it's a private family matter with the family having sole discretion to either release the details or not.

      Delete
    2. There are two issues that often crop up in cases like this: One is the fact that, contrary to public perception, police have a lot of discretion in pursuing crimes or deciding against prosecuting them.

Two, the state of advanced decomposition hinders an accurate assessment of what actually took place that led to an 'unattended death' like Brad's. Decay can be deceptive.

Combining those matters, it's clear that other factors were probably weighed in asserting there was "no foul play" involved in his disappearance and demise.

All premature deaths, however, are initially suspect, especially when there are no known ailments or defects in the victim.

In short, it's up to the family now -- do they buy the official version of how Brad Cook died? If so, why? If not, what will they do about it, if anything?

BTW: Thanks, everyone, for this intelligent debate. I too am extremely intrigued and concerned about the spate of dead bodies turning up in De Soto Kansas now, and find it hard to believe a few (or all) aren't somehow connected.

      E.R.

      Delete
    3. You make some excellent points thank you. Just wanted to add that Kansas has been pretty chilly recently, so it's unlikely that Brad's body had reached a state of advanced decomposition by the time it was found.

      Delete
  22. What seems more odd than anything is the timing of the murder of Jordan MacDonald. Brad's body was discovered at about 3:00 PM on the 29th of October. Jordan was killed within 10 hours or so of the discovery, late that night. Is it possible that Jordan learned of Maynard's connection to that somehow? Maynard's actual charge is 21-5402(a)(2) which means that he not only killed Jordan but did it while committing or fleeing another felony. (Not the exact wording) The Sheriff took a van as evidence that same morning. Therefor it must have been connected somehow. But the vehicle used to give Maynard home was not the van. So I think it is the timing that is as compelling as the proximity. They may know Maynard is involved somehow with Brad's death yet can't prove it yet.

  23. TWO dead White Young Men found within 2 Miles of each and Police say this isnt connected. Give me a Break.

  24. This story has been invaded by paranoid 'the government is out to get us' conspiracy theorists. I think Brad's family would be doing the right to disclose his cause of death to provide closure since the country did a noble thing in generously responding to their call for help. They probably won't though if indeed he committed suicide.

    1. Having had a suicide in my family I know far too well how difficult it is. When you are left to admit their suicide you end up feeling like you need to explain...when you can't. But you don't want to say or do anything to tarnish their memory. If you look at the "Bring Brad Cook Home" facebook page the only addition is a notation as to how nice his Memorial was, and a picture. One of a Biker procession to his service, two wide and at least a mile long. To them...even if he did they still loved him anyway. It's a moving picture.

  25. I think Brad's family would be doing the right THING to disclose his cause of death...

  26. I dont have any conspiracies to contribute, but I do have a bit of intrigue to add. Brad had a personal Facebook account that has since been made unavailable for public viewing. Before it was made private, someone posted this message on it which gave me enough pause for thought that I copied it down...

    Quote:

Brad Cook if your out there and can see Facebook we don't care about what happen and will put it all behind us we just want u to come back. Love ya brother

  27. Brad's behavior was so out of character for him the evening he disappeared, but typically when the media says "no foul play" then, well…they mean suicide.

I saw Brad's Facebook too. His grandpa almost broke my heart with his posts to find him. His dad with the orange tux he wore a few years ago to a prom.

The only thing I found odd was he posted his and his girlfriend pictures at places, but neither had each other designated as "in a relationship".

    1. Something had to have happened to cause his sister to start looking for him immediately after he left. That's why they located his motorcycle that night. His father even said to the press conference with the media to the effect of "if you have gotten yourself in some trouble" it's ok you can come home and we'll help you...just come home. But as soon as a body was found, in came an attorney as a spokesperson to the media and they never spoke publicly again.

      Delete
    2. I thought it was interesting too when Brad's family abruptly stopped personally communicating and started sending an attorney out instead as soon as his body was located. Obviously people only do that when they have decided they don't want to discuss something any further, which is why I'll be surprised if we ever learn the official cause of Brad's death.

  28. The Judge appointed a Public Defender for Maynard today. His "no go arraignment" is Nov. 14, 2013. I don't know what that means, but any connection or information should start coming to light soon. At least in the MacDonald case. Maynard's bond hasn't even been asked to be reduced as yet.

  29. May be cases worth watching but the timing may just be coincidence as far as the other deaths in the area, but know way to really know. That Gary guy is worth a closer look since it has been said he has admitted to being the Oakland county child killer which involved killing a Royal Oak victim and Tmothy King. He also took credit for noble that was in the Hocking river. He also admitted to knowing Joe Grozelles brother as they both worked on a cruise ship. Joe Grozelle was at victim at the Royal Military Academy in Kingston. His friends have been on the internet at times defending gary, yet can not account for his where-a -bouts when specific times and locations are mentioned.
I believe it may have been Gary that Coleen Henry was writing of when writing her article -6 disappearances . coincidence or serial killer. She mentions a girlfriend that turned an ex boy friend in and that he made reports to the police as a fake witness that used a fake name that was sometimes the same initials as the victims..

    1. Yeah, his family's silence is deafening at this point. If there was even the slightest hint of anything suspicious, they would be up in arms doing everything possible to find all they can and who was responsible. You don't just let a high profile case go ice cold if there remain any unanswered questions. The writing is pretty much on the wall.

      Delete
    2. You state that his death was ruled a suicide as fact. Where did you get this ruling that states that fact? Also by coincidence there is a lengthy article about Medical Examiner's rulings in the KC Star Sunday paper.

      Delete
    3. There is something odd about the silence also. Another coincidence of timing. The day after Maynard was arrested there has been silence on BOTH cases. There was a waitress at JT's doing a TV interview almost daily. Then NOTHING. And she NEVER mentioned Brad's being found which is odd because Brad frequented that Bar as well. Desoto is a small town. Everybody knows everybody. The Sheriff is having a Town Hall meeting in Desoto on Thursday to discuss the cases there and what his office did or is doing. I don't live in the Desoto area anymore but it would be good if someone could attend and see what they have to say.

  31. Well, they have Maynard in custody, and are in the beginning stage of preparing to take the case to trial. He's in a jail cell and will probably remain there. I'm sure they'll provide updates whenever there's noteworthy movement in the case, like setting a trial date, etc.

Regarding Brad, I'm sure all of Desoto knows what's up and are remaining silent out of respect for the family's wishes not to say anything because he took his own life. If there was any other reason for his death, they'd say something just to end the suicide speculation and put the rumors to rest.

  34. I guess what I don't get about all this is: In September the fire department shows up and puts out a vehicle on fire. They then find a body inside. It's called an unattended death and that there is no foul play. Then Brad disappears and nine days later his body found. Again it is an unattended death and there is no foul play. Then within a day Jordan's body is discovered and initially an unattended death. Then it's hmmm this one looks suspicious. This is a body of a male in his late 20's does anybody have any information that could help? When his father is apparently across the street. Jordan just turned 21 in May. We have to wait until autopsies confirm. I get that. But overall to my knowledge a cause of death has not been released in any of the three deaths. Do the authorities just think it's nobody's business. When even after an autopsy they still can't get his age right. still saying he was 22? I just don't get their attitude about all this.

"If the cause of death is a homicide or due to an accident, by law the public record would have to reflect that. Beyond that including suicide, it's a private family matter with the family having sole discretion to either release the details or not."

  35. I understand your point. In the case of the man in the burning vehicle. Did he commit suicide then set the vehicle on fire? How does that happen? In Brad's case someone close to Brad said that the "police report" stated his death was a suicide. Suicides are staged all the time. The determination is actually made by the coroner and not the police. They have said that Jordan's death was a murder. But yet in all three cases a cause of death has not been released. I'm not talking about the manner of death but the cause of death. It's just that in my opinion these cases are being handled differently than in other jurisdictions. The was an article in the KC Star a couple Sundays ago about the ME ruling deaths as suicides and finding later that they were homicides. Granted a different County but showing it does happen.

  36. Now there is another one. On Dec. 7, 2013 23 year old Gianfranco Villagomez left after a party to walk a few blocks to his girlfriend's house in Lawrence, Kansas. About 17 miles from where Brad's body was found. He went missing, as he never arrived. About 100 friends searched for two days along with authorities. His body was found on Dec. 9, 2013 in a lady's back yard. A few blocks away, but the opposite direction from the route to his girlfriend's house.

Once again, the authorities are saying there does not appear to be foul play. They say it was really cold that night. Even though this incident happened only a short distance away, it is in a different county. With a whole different set of law enforcement.

How are they doing NOTHING about this...the wording is always the same..."no foul play suspected"...the MO is always the same...separated from family or friends...same ages, sometimes found in water, sometimes in fields, sometimes a car accident is involved and yet they never mention what happened to the other driver and in some cases outright admit it was a hit and run. 41. It seems to me that authorities are somehow insinuating that these last two are weather related. And I suppose that Brad's was suicide. They really haven't said any more. There was a time, not that long ago that there would be a press conference and the press could (and would) ask questions. These days they send out a "tweet" press release two sentences long and the reporters just print it. Just like that. And you hear no more of it. It aint right!

  42. Weather related does not fit. Gianfranco Villagomez had about 30 minutes to walk to his girlfriend's house in moderately wintry weather. The first time this winter we've had a winter advisory in which you were told to not go outside at night was Jan 4-5-6. Somehow Villagomez ended up about a mile and a half in the opposite direction from his girlfriend's house. Heavy drinkers can end up freezing to death, but according to others, he wasn't really that drunk. Also, yes, these bodies are turning up where they have been searched for once, sometimes twice.

  43. LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -
"An autopsy indicates that a 23-year-old University of Kansas student died last December from a fall after he had been drinking.

The autopsy released Tuesday said Gianfranco Villagomez-Saldana suffered skull fractures, bruising on the brain and broken ribs that suggested he fell on a hard surface.

Coroner Erik Mitchell says the death was an accident."

This is a quote from KCTV in Kansas City. They claim this young man's death was an accident. If you slip and fall on your head I could see a skull fracture, but not more than one. So if you fall on your head how do you get broken ribs? His body was found in a woman's back yard. So where's the hard surface?

They keep saying all these deaths are accidents or suicides. I don't understand.

    1. Thanks for the update -- I suspect Villagomez was beaten unconscious and then either left for dead or dumped sometime soon after he died from his injuries...

Look for reasonable commonalities with other victims now: Is there a particular time-frame these young men disappeared at? Specific activities they all were engaged in prior to their disappearances and deaths? Mutual acquaintances? Were the same officer/s patrolling the neighborhoods they vanished from and/or were found in...?

There is a logical, but totally unacceptable, reason for this unusual cluster of premature deaths.

  44. All within a 10 (or so) mile radius. Within 3 months. I believe all had been out drinking the night of disappearance. Two different jurisdictions but possibly common ME protocols. They are neighboring counties. Most have not had autopsy results revealed but authorities continue to say "no foul play".

  45. The latest disappearance...this is in Kansas City. (All these are happening in the same metro area...I live here so I know they are very close together.) The names and occupations of these young men seem to be eerily similar as well at times. Sounds like same M.O...disappeared after a party. http://fox4kc.com/2014/02/18/family-wants-to-find-missing-drummer-michael-krueger/
