Shane Montgomery Missing: Presumed Drowned

The search for missing student Shane Montgomery has focused on the river and canal. Like other Smiley Face Killer victims who vanished after a late night mid-winter encounter with heavy-handed police, and/or bouncers, he too was instantly presumed to have "somehow" drowned:

Montgomery disappeared in Philadelphia over the Thanksgiving holiday immediately after an over-zealous bouncer unceremoniously ejected the youth from the bar he and his friends were celebrating at.

http://www.amazon.com/CASE-DROWNING-MEN-Investigating-Smiley-ebook/dp/B0089HD4A4/ref=asap_B004SXLULI_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1417530072&sr=1-1

It is the same district that Carlesha Freeland-Gaither's violent street-abduction occurred last month. One which was captured and thus quickly solved via surveillance cameras positioned throughout the area, and, of course, with aid from the kidnapped woman's abandoned cell phone.

Yet, strangely enough, Montgomery's would-be rescuers claim those very same devices are of little help to them now. It seems, when a hunt involves a missing young man, "it's a real challenge looking for video from surveillance cameras." And, "Trying to determine from the missing person's cell phone where they were last using the phone," is also weirdly perplexing.

But at least these inordinately confounded authorities are "interviewing as many people as [they] can."

Classically, this approach too will no doubt prove futile, as stories quickly change and film footage of the event and the territory it took place in begins to rapidly deteriorate, ultimately to vanish just as Shane Montgomery did: without a trace.

One thing is for certain though, if indeed the *educated hunch* is correct that Montgomery is somewhere in the frigid canal or river, then his body won't refloat to the surface for a number of weeks and maybe even months. By which time his slowly decomposing corpse would have naturally created volumes and volumes of alcohol -- far in excess of what he consumed just prior to his death.

And, using that false BAC level, he'll thereafter officially be declared to have been "severely intoxicated" and to have "accidentally drowned" as a result.

Case closed. Again.

  1. SHANE MONTGOMERY UPDATE: In an unusual development the FBI has quickly joined the hunt for this missing male college student.

Montgomery's odd disappearance during a night of Thanksgiving reveling makes him one of hundreds of young men who have similarly disappeared in the past two decades, only to be found drowned in a nearby body of water previously scoured by would-be rescuers.

Shane Montgomery, 21, was wearing a gray button-down shirt, jeans and, ominously, the standard type of hooded sweatshirt so many other Smiley Face victims wore when they also vanished.

Anyone with information about him is asked to call 215-686-3353/3354. A reward is being raised for the young man's return, dead or alive, and, as of the date of today's report, has reached $25,000.

  2. I live in about 20 minutes from Manayunk and I have probably been to that Kildare bar about 50 times in my life. It's a small community of college kids and recent college graduates , but the locals are dangerous and kinda ghetto type lower income, I have been drunk many times late at night staggering out of those bars and I was jumped before a bottle smashed over my head by a local I fought him off and I was fine but I'm also six foot three 265 lbs. As soon as I saw this on the Philadelphia news I thought of the smiley face killers

  3. Wow, way to give your statement credibility by generalizing us as dangerous and kinda ghetto type lower income. 500 of us were out searching for Shane & many of us are still volunteering on a daily basis. Have you personally contributed to the search efforts in any way? Hundreds of supposedly kinda ghetto type lower income types have. Blanket statements amount to prejudice.

  4. Next time you decide to judge people, and call people low class, make sure you know how to form a sentence correctly. If you live 20 mins from Manayunk, why the hell aren't you down here helping? You clearly have enough time to go on this blog and talk shit. After re-reading your comment I'm assuming you are on here attempting to get your G.E.D.
I can guarantee you all of these so called "low-income ghetto types" have contributed way more then you have either financially or by volunteering in the safe return of Shane. You're trash!

  5. A twenty something out on the town in Philadelphia on 'the biggest party night of the year' just doesn't vanish in thin air. Somebody must have saw him after he left the bar, even if it was just seeing him walk in a certain direction. The Smiley Face Killers theory seems outrageous but absolutely plausible. The connections are jarring. By and large all of the victims are male with a thin physique and have a clean cut look about them. The fact that the FBI became involved so quickly in the investigation leads me to believe the public does not have the full story. I have partied a fair bit in Manayunk, particularly at Kildare's during my early to mid 20's. Like the poster above, it's all fun and games in the establishment, but after 2am on the street, I quickly found myself (and others) retreating back to their house. Logistically speaking, Manayunk is open to transient access (rail system and right off 76). I am hoping for the best outcome.

    2. Manayunk4Life - Despite your socioeconomic grandstanding, the mystery remains. BTW, point of clarification - are you advertising for your law firm or contributing to the solution of the mystery? Care to explain? Regardless of the demographics cited and your trumpeting of Manayunk's gentrification, some pockets of blight remain, poorly lit areas, etc. and any person with common sense would not venture into these areas in the middle of the night. The poster is correct, Manayunk is quite open to transient access - did you pickup on that? The perpetrator may have been from outside of Manayunk. Horrible crimes can occur in unlikely places. I would have thought, with you as a former ADA, that your legal eminence would preclude blind pride in one's community. Your supercilious rebuttal, and denial of criminal activity within Manayunk, takes attention away from the true mystery that's unfolding, and shows your complete lack of sociological jurisprudence. Please, save your boastful ramblings for your Facebook page or for whatever fly-by-night law firm for which you work.

    3. Anonymous... you're right. I hate Pennsylvania and I'm looking to leave this awful state and area. Manayunk may have wonderful areas and most people might be nice, but with transient access from public transit anyone could have had access to Shane. Anyone could travel from anywhere and that's true everywhere. Even good areas sometimes have bad come into them from the outside. I hope Shane is found alive.

  7. I was born and raised in Philadelphia less than 2 miles away from Kildares. I get the feeling something happened to Shane that most people wouldn't ever think of....like a serial killer. I just can't see it any other way? I am not into conspiracy theories but how else does a young man just vanish into thin air without someone abducting him? Sure he was probably drunk but I just don't see him saying, hmmm let me take swim in the Schuylkill on Thanksgiving Eve in 30 degree weather? His route home wouldn't involve him having to go near the river really. Maybe he was robbed? If it was violent they'd probably would of just left him in the street (Philadelphia we're talking about.) Anyway, what got me thinking serial killer even more was from reading comments on GMA site about a similar case in Ohio and just as another article on this site called “The Case of the Drowning Men” says:
“But the brain is an efficient machine and though its focus may be directed to one particular matter it’s still constantly processing everything else on the periphery; sorting, analyzing and connecting all the data-bytes it comes across. Like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Like dots on a map.Scientists say one of the things the human brain is very quick to detect is a pattern. If so, that must be the reason why, when I glanced at the February article concerning yet another youth who had wandered away from his buddies and whose corpse was found shortly thereafter floating in the Mississippi, I blurted aloud, “What, not again,” and clicked on the news link.”
I found myself feeling very similar to that author when I saw the Ohio case, thinking “wait, what?? This has happened before??” Also, Kildares is very close to Interstate 76. I remember watching a crime show where a woman was murdered in her home and they would of never found the killer because he was a tractor trailer driver in town for 1 night. The only reason they figured out who killed the woman was because when he was finally caught states away, the DNA all matched.
Of course, it could be pure coincidence that young men separate from all their friend and then disappear after a night out and end up in a river but I just get the feeling it isn’t. Any thoughts/feelings?? (Note: Yes, I know my grammar is off.)

    1. It's very simple: If the last person to interact with Shane that night was, unfortunately, a bar bouncer, then that bar bouncer was the last person Shane interacted with ...

The reward in his missing persons case has dramatically risen to $50,000. Should be enough to loosen a few lips.

      E.R.

      Delete
    2. I also saw more data - there's a question of whether he went right or left (towards home) when he left the bar. Typically he would walk along Shurs Lane and it would take him 35 mins to walk home - something he has done multiple times before. Also his last text (to his cuz) 1:15 am; his last phone call (to a friend) 1:28; and last ping (which probably doesn't mean much) 2:38. I'm sure they've talked to "the friend" to find out any details. Sounds like he wasn't quite ready to end the party for the night? And if turning right vs. left, he may not be in the water. Getting in a car opens it up a multitude of possibilities.

      Delete
    3. Also the bar bouncer who was said to have talked with Shane - that was supposedly checked into further, and the guy happened to be talking to someone else other than Shane (based on video). Although that would've been the last person to talk to him as he left the bar. The text/call mentioned above also happened before he left the bar.

      Delete
  8. Normally, I always go with the simplest explanation when forming a hypothesis about a mystery/phenomenon. If suicide and the bouncer theory are ruled out then based on the limited information authorities have released and just the feelings/intuition I have towards the case (being Roxborough born and raised resident with Facebook friends who are closely related to the case, have partied in the same manners, and probably unknowingly the same circles as Shane) I just feel like a serial killer is totally plausible. Maybe not the Smiley Face Killer, but a serial killer. $65,000 reward, someone would of squealed by now.

  10. SHANE MONTGOMERY UPDATE: Sources say a recent and "credible" tip has brought more police onboard in the search for this missing college student. Based on the new info, the additional officers have been assigned to re-probe a river canal near the bar that Montgomery was ejected from the night he mysteriously vanished.

That bar's management now insists "there was no disturbance" the night the missing youth abruptly left the premises, although it was originally confirmed he'd been forced to leave soon after accidentally colliding with DJ equipment. They also newly claim there is "no surveillance tape" of the event.

Whilst that film footage predictably does its own disappearing act and eyewitness accounts become drastically modified, a river search intensifies. And today Montgomery's loved ones have increased the reward in his case to an astonishing $65,000.

  12. His family and friends say this was not the first stop of the night out. This was their third bar. Main Street has many bars. They were bar hopping prior to getting to Kildare's. They think Kildare's is saying $17 tab because they are afraid of liqueur license violations. A crowded night before Thanksgiving. Biggest bar night of the year behind New Years. I can't believe nobody saw anything. That street was crawling with kids. There is a Boycott Kildare's FB page. LE tight lipped? IDK. Why no show the video footage?

  13. SHANE MONTGOMERY UPDATE: An underwater recovery team found Shane Montgomery's keys in (or on the banks of) the Schuylkill River yesterday. The area had been searched before and, apart from this personal item, there is still no sign of the young man who has been missing nearly a month already.

Investigators say they are pursuing a theory that Montgomery is dead in the canal or river, although they haven't elaborated on the reason for such a hunch. If correct, however, and considering the fairly mild December weather's influence on water temperature and, thereby, the rate of decomposition, his body should be re-surfacing soon.

Typically a waterlogged corpse will 'refloat' near to where the victim originally drowned or was dumped. Shortly thereafter it may be carried along on the currents for hundreds of feet and even miles, incurring additional injuries in the journey, usually to the face and hands.

(This story is still developing; please check the comment section for further updates.)

  14. Been following this story and I agree that it fits into this theory.

I also think you should consider these unsolved "accidental drowning" cases as fitting as well -
    http://someoneismissing.com/maryland/nicholas-gochnour.htm

    http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2012/05/tompkins_county_man_found_dead.html

    http://www.michellesigona.com/2010/05/police-confirm-remains-found-are-missing-fenwick-man/

There are just too many unsolved drowning cases to not be connected...Particularly here in the US.
Number of theories come to mind...For example:
Sexual slave trade of young, athletic men is one possibility - a sexual slavery ring. They are then disposed of - after being targeted in bars where most young men attending university are drinking or intoxicated. Been happening to young women for decades - targeted, abducted, sold repeatedly for sex to make large profits quickly within a short period of time...then after they are no longer useful, they are murdered and promptly discarded. (Should I even bother to mention Mexico?)
This particular ring may be making profits on young, athletic, Caucasian men and then disposing of the bodies in water to ensure that no traces of forensic evidence can be found. The longer the body is in the water, the less evidence to utilize. Cold water in particular slows the decomposition rate of a body and therefore it takes longer for the deceased to produce the gasses that will eventually make it float to the surface.

There are so many cases with similar details - and narrowing it down, it is highly likely that many of them DO fall under other circumstances: suicide, accidental drowning due to a inebriated fall into freezing cold water, and well...body disposal after a homicide.
As for myself, the cases here that really stand out to me as being related - and committed by either a single serial killer - or possibly a crime ring of some sort - are likely many of the same similarities that detectives and yourself have pointed out:
They are physically attractive, college-aged white males.
They are targeted after a night at a drinking establishment - always centrally located near a city or town with these things in common -
    1) a lot of universities and colleges nearby - (or tourist destinations?)
    2) large bodies of water near the vicinity
    3) zones where there is a winter season and icy waters - (and college is out-of-session in the summer, yes?)

  16. It happened again: Paul Kochu, age 22, was last seen at his South Side #PITTSBURGH, #PENNSYLVANIA #PA residence around 1:30 a.m. on December 16th, 2014. Kochu spent the night at the bar watching Monday Night Football with his roommates. Around midnight, Kochu went back to his apartment in after cutting his hand on a water glass. His two roommates returned home to help him, then left to grab food at a local McDonald's. When they returned, Kochu had vanished. His cell phone, wallet and keys were also gone, but his car was still parked outside.

Kochu is 6'1" tall, 185 lbs., has brown hair and blue eyes. New surveillance video police released shows Kochu staggering past the Giant Eagle on Wharton Street around 2:46 a.m. on Dec. 16. His family believes he may have suffered a head injury sometime after cutting himself. He is seen heading inbound toward the Tenth Street Bridge in the video and is holding a white object on his right hand that is believed to be a tissue or paper towel. Kochu appeared to be wearing a dark colored jacket and dark sweatpants.

Kochu's family is offering a $20,000 reward for info leading to his location. Anyone with information, please contact Pittsburgh Police at 911 or (412) 323-7141.

    2. Nope. Due to length of time the victim was decomposing, and those contaminates seeping from one organ to another during putrefaction, a toxicology test is NOT key anymore. (Read medical experts' analysis of the issue via this site's menu tab titled 'Blood Alcohol Content: Corpses')

Accordingly, the most accurate results for Montgomery might still be had from tests on his vitreous fluid, since the eye is an enclosed organ and thereby the last one to undergo contamination from adjacent systems already in decay.

Dead or alive, the eyes are windows, in many many ways.

I think of Paul , from time to to , and I try to be in a happy spirit because such a nice nurse like Paul is in God Heaven and our angel would want us that really Love and care about him to be happy and walk in God Grace , and always know Christ shall come again in this world of hate, evil and sin .
