Will diggers find missing student Kristin Smart this time?

The stunning blonde in the poster below is Kristin Smart. The 19-year-old freshman vanished from a campus beer party at Cal Poly in May 1996 and was declared deceased in 2002, although her remains were never found.

Will diggers find missing student Kristin Smart this time?

This month, however, “excavation” of the college grounds has begun at various locations which, according to a report by the Washington Post, cadaver dogs have hit upon.

The FBI also revealed that a new lead had “developed” during the past couple of years that prompted them to target those “high visibility” sites in September.

The renewed effort to solve Smart’s mysterious missing-persons case follows two decades of sporadic inquiries which resulted in only one individual being labeled a ‘person of interest’ -- a male student who escorted the inebriated undergrad to her dorm room that spring night.

He wasn’t identified in the Post’s article this week, but police say the man had been repeatedly questioned when Kristin "Roxy" Smart first disappeared and, while he’s back on their radar again in 2016, still hasn’t been named a suspect in her puzzling cold case.

And he may never be, due to the amount of time that has passed and lost evidence.

A barely conscious and barely dressed Smart was last seen alive in the young man’s company wearing only “running shorts” and a “short cropped” tee shirt.

A female classmate of Smart’s told the Associated Press that she’d attempted to alert university officials about her friend’s subsequent unexplained disappearance and that they declined to take any action, insisting “she’ll be back” after the Memorial Day break had ended.

But Kristin Smart was never seen or heard from again.

Police circle back in the search for Adrian Lynch

After scaling back the hunt for Adrian Lynch, missing in Jersey UK since early December, police say they'll revisit the properties they searched before...

Adrian Lynch is still missing from Jersey UK

Investigators have previously stated that "in all probability Adrian is dead" and continued to caution that their renewed efforts this week are "not only for Adrian, but also for any of his possessions."

They have come to believe the missing 20-year-old electrician had his passport and driver's license on him when he vanished in thin air well over a month ago, despite abandoning his wallet and other personal effects.

Adrian Lynch was last seen alive leaving a Christmas party in a cab. His cellphone, billfold and belt were subsequently discovered in the neighborhood of Carrefour Selous where the taxi driver dropped him off.

Using surveillance video and eyewitness testimony, Jersey police have further refined the timeline of events that led up to Lynch's December 5th disappearance. These are as follows:

1. At midnight Adrian Lynch exited a taxi at the intersection of Ruette D'Avranches and La Rue;

2. Around the same time, and in an area just south of Carrefour Selous, he spoke with a motorist;

3. Roughly a half hour later, two other separate individuals believe they spotted him passing by on foot;

4. By 1:00 a.m., someone near Rue de la Golarde believes they saw Lynch too, and a homeowner in that same area also confirmed seeing a young man of his description, minutes after;

5. Lynch then appears to have journeyed onto La Rue du Douet, where he may have begun knocking on doors;

6. Between 1:30 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. he allegedly walked by the Bon Air riding stables, and, soon thereafter, was seen by a homeowner at Clos de Devant.

After this last sighting, however, Adrian 'Ady' Lynch completely fell off the radar. He is now "presumed dead."

Anyone who knows what happened to him should contact authorities at 612612, or CrimeStoppers at 0800555111.

Footprints Narrow Search for Missing Singer Craig Strickland, Feared Drowned

Footprints discovered in the quest to find Craig Strickland have helped narrow the search area for Backroad Anthem's still missing lead singer.

Craig Strickland - Backroad Anthem

Strickland and his younger hunting companion Chase Morland headed into an epic winter storm a week ago to "kill ducks" in Oklahoma's sprawling Kaw Lake region.

The latter drowned after an apparent capsizing, and was found dead by searchers alongside Craig Strickland's black labrador retriever, Sammy.

The fact that the middle-aged dog survived the deadly misadventure, however, has fueled hopes that the 29-year-old country music star is also still alive, albeit lost somewhere in the wilderness.

That hope is fast dwindling though because, apart from stumbling across the trio's footprints and other tracks they'd left when first arriving in the area last Sunday, there has been no subsequent signs of life.

Massive Kaw Lake is famous for its monster waves and treacherous boating conditions, so there is reasonable speculation now that Craig Strickland might likewise have perished in it.

If so -- due to air and water temps -- it could take quite awhile for his body to resurface, which most likely will be in the vicinity of where Chase Morland's corpse was found and close to the place the two men had launched from.

In the meantime, search teams have begun probing the lake's bottom, in the specific area where their footprints were finally discovered this week, using sophisticated sonar.

What really happened to Lauren Spierer?

For Lauren Spierer, June 3rd 2015, will mark four years and thousands of dead-end tips since she disappeared without a trace from Bloomington Indiana, after a calamitous night of booze and drugs and carousing:

Some people theorize that this now-famous missing person was murdered, and her body dumped someplace.

Others believe the petite young blonde was abducted while staggering home to her nearby apartment.

They're the ones holding out hope that she may still be alive today, albeit living a desperate existence as somebody's hostage and sex slave.

After all, things like that have been known to happen from time to time, as Ariel Castro and his Cleveland kidnappings of Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus prove.

But I don't think such a fate befell young Lauren Spierer.  She wasn't as lucky...

[click to read/share "The Auto-Assassination of Lauren Spierer"]

The parents of missing person Lauren Spierer filed a lawsuit this week against the trio of young men who were last seen with their daughter on the day that she vanished:

Robert and Charlene Spierer claim that the negligence of Corey Rossman, Mike Beth and Jay Rosenbaum -- who all lawyered up within hours of Spierer being reported as missing -- is what ultimately "resulted in her disappearance, death, or injury."

Attorneys representing the Spierers say a statute of limitations barring such a civil action was bound to kick in soon and, since the young woman still remains unaccounted for, they felt legally compelled to file suit for the wrongful acts of these former students.

All three defendants named in the suit had either admitted to being with a grossly inebriated Spierer the day she vanished without a trace, or were witnessed by others as being in her company in the hours before she went missing.

Many fellow revelers that evening had observed Spierer -- bruised from repeatedly falling down and practically incoherent -- being escorted and even carried at times by her three male comrades.

However, all the men insist that Spierer somehow made a full recovery later on, then left their apartment for her own, barefoot, at around four in the morning. After which, they say they don't know what may have happened to her.

One of the youths in fact has alleged amnesia: He was punched in the face earlier that fateful night by an interceder who apparently hoped to convince him, through physical force, to take the visibly incapacitated woman safely back to her home so she could sleep it off.

He declined to do so, unfortunately, and Lauren Spierer continued to party with Rossman, Beth, and Rosenbaum for several more hours.

The Spierers insist none of those key players have ever been 100 percent forthright about the predawn events which led up to their daughter's disappearance, and they now firmly believe she never left the youths' apartment at all.

BREAKING NEWS: Paul Kochu Found Drowned

Paul Kochu has been found drowned, roughly three months after the 22-year-old nurse vanished during a night out with his roommates that left him mysteriously injured.

Pittsburgh police say they were contacted about a body floating in the Ohio River and that it was positively identified as the missing man through dental records.

An autopsy was performed but the results have not yet been publicly released, and the cause and manner of death are still unknown.

The family of Paul Kochu had conducted numerous searches for him in the Pittsburgh area and even offered a missing person reward for help in solving his case.

They've released the following statement:

"It is with heavy hearts and unspeakable sadness that we learned today of the death of our beloved son and brother, Paul. These are circumstances no family ever dream of coping with. Though we are left with many questions, what we know for sure is Paul was the light of our lives, and we will not be the same without him.

"Paul loved Pittsburgh. Having traveled here repeatedly over the past four months as we held out hope in the search for Paul, it is clear to us why the community was so dear to him, In addition to family and friends, countless strangers embraced us and offered their love and support in helping us during this difficult time. There are no adequate words to express the gratitude we feel towards the Pittsburgh community."

Sahray Barber Missing Update

Foul play suspected in the Sahray Barber missing person case in southern California:

But investigators aren't sure if the 22-year-old's disappearance is related to a spate of attacks on females at Cal State's San Bernardino campus right across from her home.

Barber has been suspiciously missing since early March 2015, and this week police finally announced they had identified some people "of interest" who, the cops note, are not being as cooperative as they should.

That's led many to speculate the POIs in Barber's case may in fact be her very own roommates, said to have been noticeably absent from recent public vigils held to honor the popular but still-missing art student.

http://www.crimemagazine.com/two-sought-sahray-barber-abduction
Click image for more Sahray Barber news
Reportedly, Sahray Barber rents a room in the house of a California couple who has a very young child, but detectives working the case refuse to confirm or deny if the two are the persons of interest now.

Barber's vanishing has baffled authorities searching for her, since there was "no sign of struggle" outside her residence and her laptop and cell phone were found carefully placed in nearby bushes.

K-9s traced the young woman's last movements right outside her home near the state university, and say that trail went cold at the edge of the adjoining sidewalk.

They theorize, therefore, that Barber may have gotten into a vehicle the day she went missing, either on her own free will, or involuntarily.

She was expected to be at work, but never showed.

Missing in Michigan - Ken Gruno

Ken Gruno went mysteriously missing in Michigan on the evening of December 27th 2014, after stepping outside a pub for a breath of fresh air. The 27-year-old left behind his coat and credit card, and a group of bewildered mates.

Since Gruno's unexplained disappearance, family, friends and police have conducted numerous searches of the neighborhood and even the nearby riverbanks.

Now, however, bad weather and subzero temperatures are seriously hampering their efforts to find the missing man, and the major search which was to be launched today has had to be postponed for fear that participants may be harmed in the process.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089HD4A4Ken Gruno was celebrating the holidays with friends at the Otisville Hotel bar in the 100 block of West Main Street in northern Genesee County, where he appears to have somehow completely dematerialized -- he has not been seen or heard from since that night.

"It's completely out of his character," say those who know him best. "He's always in contact with someone, or on his computer."

Gruno is approximately 6-feet tall and 175 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, a gray flannel shirt with a vest and bowtie, and slip-on work boots. Anyone with information regarding his bizarre disappearance is asked to call the Michigan State Police Flint post at 810-732-1111.

POLICE: Hannah Graham Kidnapper a Serial Killer

The vanishing of Hannah Graham from her Virginia university town in mid-September is the fifth such disappearance of a young female from that particular locale in as many years. And only one body has ever been found.

That's the bad news, considering the search for Graham -- or what remains of the 18-year-old -- has become more desperate by the hour.

The good news is that police now believe they finally have the serial killer in custody after DNA evidence linked Jesse Matthew, the prime suspect in Graham's disappearance, to a similar attempted abduction and sex assault in 2005 as well as to the rape and slaying of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington four years later.

If their theory is correct, then the 32-year-old exceptional athlete with an exceptionally checkered past that includes a rape charge would also be an exceptional serial murderer too, since, by and large, such violent sadists are supposed to be young white males.

Ted Bundy mugshotThat has been the longstanding supposition, of course, with infamous Ted Bundy the standard bearer.

Lately, though, experts have been cautioning homicide investigators that the rule book on this class of deadly perpetrator contains some outdated and extremely faulty data; namely that black offenders just like Jesse Matthew are grossly underrepresented in it, and they and their victims wrongly falling under the radar as a result.

How, in the land of Rodney King, Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown could that happen?!

Because, as with most other types of criminal profiling, when law enforcement officials try to pinpoint who a likely serial killer may be, and who he likely could not be, they rely on age-old beliefs borne mainly out of bias: Maniacally murderous men who successfully evade detection and arrest are smart (really, really smart like Jack the Ripper was) and Caucasian males are obviously way smarter than African American males are. At the very least because they're better educated.

It's called racial stereotyping at its most perverse and reverse, but the myth of a deviously-brilliant white man butchering for sport and eluding capture for years or even decades might not only be bigoted to the core. It could in fact be the only reason why some serial killers are never caught.

After all, the crime experts appear to be dead right in their latest assessments -- a majority of the world's homicidal sociopaths did not turn out to be anywhere near the geniuses once thought, and a fair number of them have also been dark-skinned as well.

So too the perceived status of victims and their communities unjustly factor into the criminal justice equation, more often than not, determining the speed and depth to which certain investigations are conducted, if at all.

Thus, cases of affluent individuals who are missing or murdered in affluent areas typically garner greater public attention and resources than those of down-and-out vagabonds, prostitutes or drug addicts. Especially if the latter unfortunates fell victim to foul play in economically-depressed neighborhoods -- the exact environments where, studies show, serial killers of color almost exclusively prey.

That historically prejudicial treatment by police and the press explains why we know and care so much right now about still-missing college coed Hannah Graham and her unlucky lookalike predecessor Morgan Harrington. Yet the same killer's equally tragic victims who were themselves either black or lesser privileged ... not so much.

A societal slant which, to the opportunistic predators hiding among us, makes for fertile hunting grounds.

UPDATE: Authorities are offering a $100,000 reward for information which leads to the safe return of Graham. The University of Virginia sophomore’s been uncharacteristically missing since September 13th.

Additionally, they are now examining a number of other unsolved homicides and missing person cases of young people throughout the Virginia areas that suspect Jesse L. Matthew was known to have either lived or worked in.

For instance, in Campbell County police are searching for a link to the abduction, rape and murder of Cassandra Morton, whose body was dumped in woods near Lynchburg in late 2009.

Orange County police are also re-investigating the case of Samantha Ann Clarke, missing since September 13, 2010.

And in nearby Montgomery County, the sheriff's office is revisiting the 2009 double homicide of Virginia Tech students Heidi Childs and David Metzler. The two were in a long term relationship and sitting together in a parked vehicle the night they both were shot to death and then robbed. DNA evidence emerged in the case a few years later but their murders remain unsolved to date.

MISSING PERSON ALERT: Lucius Robbi

Missing person Lucius Robbi, 21, was headed to college in Montana this week, but why he never made it there is still a total mystery, say friends and family.

An avid outdoorsman and extreme-sport enthusiast, Robbi was reportedly considering camping along his journey from Horseshoe Bend Idaho toward school and orientation.

Indeed, surveillance footage taken at a Chevron gas station in Garden Valley Idaho is believed to have captured a fleeting image of his Suburu with a kayak strapped atop it.

However, apart from that early video and despite intensely scouring the hills and highways that the missing student may have traveled, there's been no further sign of him.

According to his father, Marc Robbi, it's entirely atypical for the youth to disappear without telling anyone where he was going, or to not follow through on his commitments.

"We're very, very worried at this point," Mr. Robbi conceded.

Greatly hindering the search for his missing son is the fact that no one seems to know the exact route Lucius Robbi took through the wilderness -- a course which could have involved any number of possibilities, including Highway 93 to Montana, Highway 21 to Stanley, Highway 75 to Challis ... etc.

The youth has not been sighted nor heard from in over week now, but his mother, Tina Glaessner, still remains optimistic. 'If anybody can survive out there for seven days, he can do it,' she claims.

Robbi is five-foot-eleven and 160 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was driving a green 1997 Subaru Legacy with California license plates 6 CCP 540.

Anyone with information about him is urged to contact the Boise County Sheriff’s Office at (208) 392-4411, Tina Glaessner at (707) 296-0048; Custer County Idaho Sheriff's Office at (208) 879-2232; or the Ravalli County Sheriff's Office (406) 363-3033.

POLICE: Erin Corwin Killer was 'Lying in Wait' for Her

The killer of Erin Corwin was "lying in wait" for her to come for a preplanned romantic tryst, investigators say, drastically elevating the charges and penalty for her vicious murder.

If true, the pretty 19-year-old Californian was betrayed in the most classic and horrific of ways -- by an illicit lover, and, in this case, her very own next-door neighbor, Christopher Lee.

Corwin went inexplicably missing this summer after telling her husband she was going to Joshua Tree National Park for a couple of hours. Her car was later located a few miles shy of that location.

Following an intensive weeks-long search for the newly pregnant woman, Corwin's decomposed corpse was finally located on August 16th less than two miles from her home at the bottom of an abandoned mineshaft.

Her paramour, the long suspected Lee, was taken into custody the very next day in Alaska where the former marine and his childhood-sweetheart/wife Nichole had recently moved together.

Nichole Lee has now been labeled "a person of interest" in the ongoing murder investigation.

Homicide victim Erin Corwin was believed to have been secretly seeing Christopher Lee, and even carrying his baby, for months. But those in the know also claim that Lee expressed grave concerns about how his own spouse would react if she found out.

At his arraignment, prosecutors further disclosed that Lee had conducted several online searches on how to "dispose of a dead body."  The avid hunter and ex-soldier stood shackled and unshaven in court on Tuesday.

Lee's allegedly temperamental wife has been under intense scrutiny herself ever since making some shadowy observations regarding the inability of authorities to bring murder charges against someone if a missing person can't be found

She is said to have additionally hinted that the whereabouts of Corwin's remains would "never" be discovered and that detectives "missed" important evidence when they first came to the couple's home to execute a search warrant.

Christopher and Nicole Lee have one child by marriage. It's not clear what will become of their offspring if both parents are to be charged now.

Abigail Hernandez Update: Police Sketch Released

Authorities investigating the Abigail Hernandez nine-month disappearance from her Conway, New Hampshire community say the formerly-missing teen is cooperating with them, to some degree.

Thus far, however, scant details have been released to the public, and no one but prosecutors, police and her family even know where the girl actually was throughout the entire time she was missing. Let alone whether Hernandez willingly ran off last autumn, was lured away from her residence by someone she trusted, or outright abducted by a stranger.

But a police sketch of a possible suspect in this strange missing person case is now being widely circulated.

Officials are hoping someone may recognize the thirty-something male in the pencil portrait or remember seeing him in the vicinity of the Hernandez home, either on the day she vanished -- October 9th 2013 -- or in the days preceding the event.

The unknown male subject depicted in the police handout was described by Abigail Hernandez herself as having darkish skin, dark brown eyes, and black stubble facial hair. She also noted that he was slightly overweight and stood not much taller than her own 5-foot-4 frame.

Whether this individual aided the then 14-year-old as a voluntary runaway or is in fact her kidnapper still isn't clear, officials state. But either way, custodial interference of a minor child is a felony, so the man is being sought now for more than just questioning.

MISSING PERSON: Erin Corwin

Three weeks after Erin Corwin, 19 and newly pregnant, disappeared en route to meet her married paramour in Joshua Tree National Park there is still no sign of her:

California investigators now claim the pretty and petite 19-year-old and her ex-marine lover, Christopher Lee, were rendezvousing there on June 28th "to go hunting" together "in celebration" of the surprise pregnancy.

They also suspect that therein lies a hidden and bloody crime scene, albeit numerous searches of the vast forest reserve for clues as to the missing young woman's fate has thus far turned up nothing.

Records indicate -- and Lee has admitted -- that the former marine was in fact hunting within Joshua Tree park grounds at the same time Corwin was alleged to have gone there to meet him. She has not been seen nor heard from since.

Corwin is herself the wife of an active-duty soldier, although her husband is no longer considered a suspect in her disappearance. Attention instead is now squarely on Christopher Lee who, not incidentally, has been apprehended on a separate but "unrelated" weapons charge.

Neighbors of both Corwin and Lee allege the two have been secretly seeing each other "for awhile" and that Lee expressed fears he might lose custody of his own legitimate child if the illicit affair and pregnancy was revealed to his wife.

A concern like that is often motive enough for a premeditated killing, police are aware, as is the wrath of an extremely jealous spouse...

However, despite the strong belief that "a felony occurred" in the missing person case of Erin Corwin, authorities have not yet ruled out the possibility she may have left the area voluntarily and are therefore asking the public to be vigilant.

Corwin is described as 5'2" tall, 120 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes, and will be turning 20 soon. She has no known medical or psychological issues which could otherwise account for her sudden and unplanned absence.

Anyone with knowledge of this missing woman's current whereabouts or her remains is urged to call the San Bernardino County sheriff’s Specialized Investigation Division at (909) 387-3589 or the sheriff’s dispatch at (909) 387-8313. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via the WeTip hotline at (800) 782-7463.

Kansas Killer Strikes Again? Michael Packard Found Dead

This weekend popular DJ Michael Packard unwittingly joined a growing list of missing young males found dead in the Lawrence Kansas area:

The 26-year-old vanished New Year's eve while "working the door" at the Granada Theater.

He was officially reported missing by friends when he subsequently failed to show for a regular disc jockey gig at the Bottleneck bar on Thursday evening.

Following a fruitless search for him, Packard's corpse was just discovered Friday on the grounds of Clinton State Park.

Why he would have gone there at all still remains a mystery, but, as with other young men who've met up with a similar fate in this district recently, police are already claiming there was "no foul play" involved in either his disappearance or premature demise.

However, a cause of death for Michael Packard has yet to be determined.

The Trial and Tribulation of Lauren Spierer

Three male students -- former friends of Lauren Spierer -- are reportedly the last people to have seen the still-missing young woman alive in the early morning hours of June 3rd, 2011. But if they know anything they're not talking:

This year that recalcitrant trio finally found themselves sued for her presumed and wrongful death.

Not only do the missing girl's parents adamantly believe that these fellows were responsible for giving their petite blonde daughter too much alcohol and/or drugs, leading to her injury and  disappearance, but they also accuse the boys of deliberately "stonewalling" them.

Thus, at the two-year mark of Spierer's high-profile missing persons case, a civil action was filed seeking reasonable compensation for the untimely loss of a loved one.

This week, however, a judge patently disagreed with the Spierers and their attorneys on the subject of who is or isn't a bad guy.  At least as pertains to one of the defendants ... READ FULL LAUREN SPIERER TRIAL UPDATE HERE.

MISSING PERSON ALERT: Jesse Larson

BREAKING NEWS: The body of Jesse Larson has been found on the family farm in Crosby Minnesota today. The young man disappeared this past summer while hunting and hadn't been seen or heard from since. Condolences go out to the family who never gave up searching for their lost loved one. Read FULL COVERAGE HERE and the original missing person report below.

7/20/13: Killing Killers is re-posting this 7/2/13 missing person alert for Jesse Larson who disappeared from his rural property in Crosby, Minnesota under unusual circumstances on the 20th of June 2013.

The 27-year-old's family has been concerned for his welfare ever since his black Labrador, Annie, returned home in somewhat ragged condition, just days after the two had ventured by truck into the woodlands together, presumably to go hiking or hunting.

Photo: 150 days - MISSING - never forgotten and always loved.Thereafter, the Larsons conducted a search on their own and discovered another of their dogs inside the missing man's abandoned vehicle.

That was almost two weeks ago and though police performed a few flybys over the young man's last known location, as of the date this missing person alert was published, they have yet to launch a ground search for him.

Typical in these cases, Larson's has received scant attention from the media as well, although Senator Udall's missing brother, gone less than a week while hiking in Wyoming, is currently making front page news today.

The city of Crosby Minnesota, where Citizen Larson hails from, was once known for its rich deposits of iron and commercial mining enterprises. As a result, there are many old mines and ore pits still to be found throughout the area, some of which could potentially pose hazards.

Larson, 27, is described as a Caucasian male, about 5'9" tall and 175 pounds, with brown hair. He is believed to be wearing jeans, a tee shirt, and brown work boots. Anyone who knows what happened to him and/or his current whereabouts is urged to contact the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office at 218-829-4749.

Alaska serial killer Israel Keyes update

Feds hike body-count of Alaska serial killer Israel Keyes
NEW JERSEY VICTIM UPDATE PUBLISHED HERE
DID HE MURDER THE MCSTAY FAMILY TOO?

The death toll has risen to nearly a dozen confirmed slayings now, but the investigation into the deceased serial murderer's trail of blood is hardly closed, FBI spokesmen announced today.
Alaska serial killer Israel KeyesThe Bureau has also provided a revised travel timeline for the highly mobile killer Keyes, and their new one not only ominously stretches overseas, it's interactive.

Many of the thus-far nameless victims being sought by authorities were gradually hinted at by Keyes himself while incarcerated for the rape, murder and dismemberment of Alaskan teen Samantha Koenig in 2012.

But he killed himself in his jail cell before agents could extract the precise details of his decade-long murder spree.

So once again they're asking for the public's aid in identifying and locating victims of the Alaska serial killer.

You can read all about this fiendish "murder addict" and his numerous misdeeds in my original coverage below (last updated 12/12/12). Use the search box for additional references, including the case of Colin Gillis, still listed as missing from Keyes' neck of the woods in upstate NY.

FBI requests public’s help with
dead serial killer, Israel Keyes

He is proving to be one of the most criminally insane serial killers of all time, with an unprecedented crime spree that includes rape, murder, dismemberment, arson, and bank robbery.
A page from Israel Keyes suicide letter

But, thankfully, Israel Keyes’ decade-long, cross-country reign of terror, which even involved burying caches of weapons, money and other materials for preplanned homicides, has officially come to an end this winter:

He committed suicide in an Alaskan jail the first week of December 2012, leaving behind a blood-soaked note currently being analyzed by the FBI. >

In so doing, Keyes executed his last sadistic act on humanity, slamming the door forever on a tenuous and terrible dialog investigators had necessarily established with him while he was in custody awaiting trial for brutally slaying a teenage girl in Alaska.

It was an arduous process getting the 34-year-old psychopath to come clean about his crimes, and throughout these interviews Keyes displayed a distinctly unfunny sense of humor which agents had feigned to be entertained by, in hopes of extracting from Keyes all the locations, names and details of his unknown victims.

But they didn’t succeed at this gruesome task in time.

Felonies for fun

Israel Keyes was a trained U.S. soldier in the 1990s stationed at some point in the Middle East, and when he finally returned from his tour of duty he set himself up first as a handyman and later as a construction contractor, cunningly inventing a cover for cruelties he would keep well-hidden from his wife, child, friends and neighbors.

In the construction industry he had an ideal profession, one that would give him the perfect excuse for traveling the countryside at length in search of unlucky individuals and couples to torture and kill.

It was a double life Keyes had led up until his capture in 2012; an elaborate ruse he "enjoyed" immensely within which he was able to make every state in the Union his hunting ground, and every kind of American citizen his game.

And in his capacity as a self-styled, roving serial murderer, Keyes was to be indiscriminate; he killed females, he killed males, he killed the old and the young.

Madness to his methods

Although Keyes was classified as an 'organized' serial murderer for his coolheaded, coldblooded criminology, at the time he was apprehended by authorities he was already descending into killer chaos of the “disorganized” variety: Targeting pairs and couples for prey, and breaking his own rules in obtaining these hard-to-get victims by killing on his home turf, using his own vehicle, and stealing victims’ credit cards to fund his adventures and travels.

This is how he got himself snared, fortunately, and it’s not that uncommon either—crafty Ted Bundy’s mental faculties also rapidly deteriorated toward the end, until he was killing solely by maniacal compulsion and leaving at his crime scenes a long and bloody trail.

Bundy too had started spilling the beans while he was incarcerated and facing death in the electric chair, and it’s believed that he did, by his last breath, tell investigators everything. More or less without the kind of exaggerations that some of his ilk are wont to do once they’re thrust into the spotlight.

Israel Keyes studied up on the likes of Bundy, he told his interrogators, but he also made it very clear to them that he was nobody’s copycat.

The chilling kills he did admit to doing show such boasts might just be true.

However, Keyes did not tell all before he expired, and, rest assured, those awful murders which he did confess to committing were not the embellished accounts or fabrications of a delusional madman perversely seeking adulation. Each and every one of these have so far been corroborated in follow ups by police. Right down to the minutest detail.

But there’s much more that Keyes had alluded to in his final days, and he was ever so slowly revealing the course of these hellish journeys and acts he undertook, before his cowardly end left investigators hanging.

So the FBI is now urgently requesting the public’s assistance in solving the half-told horrors Israel Keyes committed as he drove and flew from state to state, deliberately targeting remote areas such as campsites, boat launches, and parks to lurk in and kill.

An urgent appeal from the FBI:

"Mary Rook, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the state of Alaska, requests the public’s assistance in developing information concerning the travels of suspected serial killer Israel Keyes, deceased, in order to identify additional victims. Anyone with information concerning Keyes is encouraged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

"Based upon investigation conducted following his arrest in March 2012, Israel Keyes is believed to have committed multiple kidnappings and murders across the country between 2001 and March 2012. Keyes lived in Washington from 2001 to March 2007, at which time he moved to Alaska. While living in Alaska, Keyes worked as a general contractor but traveled extensively. In a series of interviews with law enforcement, Keyes described significant planning and preparation for his murders, reflecting a meticulous and organized approach to his crimes. It was not unusual for Keyes to fly into an airport, rent a car, and drive hundreds of miles to his final destination. This was the case in the murder of Bill and Loraine Currier, where Keyes flew into Chicago, rented a car, and drove across several states before arriving in Essex, Vermont. After the murder of the Curriers, Keyes continued his travels on the east coast before returning to Chicago and then to Alaska.

"Keyes admitted responsibility for robbing several banks during this timeframe, two of which investigators have corroborated. Keyes used the proceeds from his bank robberies to pay for his travel, along with money he made as a general contractor. Keyes also admitted traveling to various locations to leave supplies he planned to use in a future crime. Keyes buried caches throughout the United States. The FBI has recovered two caches buried by Keyes—one in Eagle River, Alaska, and one near Blakes Falls Reservoir in New York. The caches contained weapons and other items used to dispose of bodies. Keyes indicated the other caches he buried throughout the U.S. contain weapons, money, and items used to dispose of victims.

“Investigators believe that Keyes did not know any of his victims prior to their abductions. He described several remote locations that he frequented to look for victims—parks, campgrounds, trailheads, cemeteries, boating areas, etc. Keyes also told investigators that prior to the Currier case, his victims’ disappearances received little if any media coverage. Based on his own research, Keyes stated that one of his victims has been recovered but authorities ruled the death accidental. Investigators have not identified this victim or where this crime occurred.

"Keyes admitted to murdering four people in Washington; he killed two people (independent of each other) sometime during 2005 and 2006 and murdered a couple in Washington between 2001 and 2005. It is unknown if these victims were residents of Washington or if they were vacationing in Washington but resided in another state. It is also possible Keyes abducted them from a nearby state and transported them to Washington.

"Additionally, Keyes admitted to investigators that in 2009 he murdered a victim on the east coast and disposed of the body in New York State. Based on Keyes’ statements, investigators believe Keyes abducted the victim from a surrounding state and transported him/her to New York.

"The timeline below is an outline of Keyes’ travels and whereabouts throughout the United States from 2001 to present. Due to Keyes’ pattern of traveling significant distances by car, the locations are grouped by region rather than specific states."
