Warrants Issued for 'Missing' Boater Found Adrift After Fishy 'Mishap'

Warrants regarding formerly “missing” boater Nathan Carman have been issued, after he was found adrift last weekend in the Atlantic and the only other crew member -- his mom -- remains “lost at sea.”

It’s not the first time the young man has fallen under suspicion of the authorities. Carman, who lives in Vermont but was born in Connecticut, became “a suspect” in his wealthy grandfather’s shooting death three years ago.

No one has yet been charged for that murder, but, now that one of the dead man’s heirs has vanished and is presumed deceased too, police have renewed their interest in the unsolved homicide and in the one person who seems to link both cases: 22-year-old Nathan Carman.

The Hartford Courant examined all the related court documents this week and reported that young Carman had been suspected in the murder of 87-year-old widower John Chakalos on December 20, 2013. In part because he was the last person to see the victim alive.

Records show, in fact, that the then-teenaged and troubled youth was nearly taken into custody for his grandfather's brutal killing several months later, before a warrant for his arrest was vacated on unspecified grounds.

In a brief interview with the Associated Press this week, Nathan Carman denied responsibility for either his elderly relative’s slaying or his mother’s recent disappearance.

Linda Carman, 54, was one of four daughters to inherit the slain Chakalos’ vast estate, estimated at the time to have been worth in excess of $40-million.

The missing middle-aged heiress and her “autistic” grown son embarked together on one of their “routine” fishing trips from Rhode Island on September 17th.

It’s unclear what happened to their boat, the Chicken Pox, or to Mrs. Carman, but sole survivor Nathan Carman was found “in a four-person life-raft” over the weekend and the Coast Guard questioned him in detail about the “accident” he claims sank the vessel.

The young man told CG investigators that, prior to the craft suddenly “falling out from under” him as it was rapidly taking on water, he’d heard the engine make “a funny sound.”

State and federal officials are indicating they think Carman’s story likewise sounds a bit “funny” and are continuing to probe the fishy incident.

Meanwhile, they'll continue to search for his missing mom as well; although, if Linda Carman wasn't murdered onboard, then, in all probability, she has drowned.

Will diggers find missing student Kristin Smart this time?

The stunning blonde in the poster below is Kristin Smart. The 19-year-old freshman vanished from a campus beer party at Cal Poly in May 1996 and was declared deceased in 2002, although her remains were never found.

Will diggers find missing student Kristin Smart this time?

This month, however, “excavation” of the college grounds has begun at various locations which, according to a report by the Washington Post, cadaver dogs have hit upon.

The FBI also revealed that a new lead had “developed” during the past couple of years that prompted them to target those “high visibility” sites in September.

The renewed effort to solve Smart’s mysterious missing-persons case follows two decades of sporadic inquiries which resulted in only one individual being labeled a ‘person of interest’ -- a male student who escorted the inebriated undergrad to her dorm room that spring night.

He wasn’t identified in the Post’s article this week, but police say the man had been repeatedly questioned when Kristin "Roxy" Smart first disappeared and, while he’s back on their radar again in 2016, still hasn’t been named a suspect in her puzzling cold case.

And he may never be, due to the amount of time that has passed and lost evidence.

A barely conscious and barely dressed Smart was last seen alive in the young man’s company wearing only “running shorts” and a “short cropped” tee shirt.

A female classmate of Smart’s told the Associated Press that she’d attempted to alert university officials about her friend’s subsequent unexplained disappearance and that they declined to take any action, insisting “she’ll be back” after the Memorial Day break had ended.

But Kristin Smart was never seen or heard from again.

Alaska serial killer Israel Keyes update

Feds hike body-count of Alaska serial killer Israel Keyes
NEW JERSEY VICTIM UPDATE PUBLISHED HERE
DID HE MURDER THE MCSTAY FAMILY TOO?

The death toll has risen to nearly a dozen confirmed slayings now, but the investigation into the deceased serial murderer's trail of blood is hardly closed, FBI spokesmen announced today.
Alaska serial killer Israel KeyesThe Bureau has also provided a revised travel timeline for the highly mobile killer Keyes, and their new one not only ominously stretches overseas, it's interactive.

Many of the thus-far nameless victims being sought by authorities were gradually hinted at by Keyes himself while incarcerated for the rape, murder and dismemberment of Alaskan teen Samantha Koenig in 2012.

But he killed himself in his jail cell before agents could extract the precise details of his decade-long murder spree.

So once again they're asking for the public's aid in identifying and locating victims of the Alaska serial killer.

You can read all about this fiendish "murder addict" and his numerous misdeeds in my original coverage below (last updated 12/12/12). Use the search box for additional references, including the case of Colin Gillis, still listed as missing from Keyes' neck of the woods in upstate NY.

FBI requests public’s help with
dead serial killer, Israel Keyes

He is proving to be one of the most criminally insane serial killers of all time, with an unprecedented crime spree that includes rape, murder, dismemberment, arson, and bank robbery.
A page from Israel Keyes suicide letter

But, thankfully, Israel Keyes’ decade-long, cross-country reign of terror, which even involved burying caches of weapons, money and other materials for preplanned homicides, has officially come to an end this winter:

He committed suicide in an Alaskan jail the first week of December 2012, leaving behind a blood-soaked note currently being analyzed by the FBI. >

In so doing, Keyes executed his last sadistic act on humanity, slamming the door forever on a tenuous and terrible dialog investigators had necessarily established with him while he was in custody awaiting trial for brutally slaying a teenage girl in Alaska.

It was an arduous process getting the 34-year-old psychopath to come clean about his crimes, and throughout these interviews Keyes displayed a distinctly unfunny sense of humor which agents had feigned to be entertained by, in hopes of extracting from Keyes all the locations, names and details of his unknown victims.

But they didn’t succeed at this gruesome task in time.

Felonies for fun

Israel Keyes was a trained U.S. soldier in the 1990s stationed at some point in the Middle East, and when he finally returned from his tour of duty he set himself up first as a handyman and later as a construction contractor, cunningly inventing a cover for cruelties he would keep well-hidden from his wife, child, friends and neighbors.

In the construction industry he had an ideal profession, one that would give him the perfect excuse for traveling the countryside at length in search of unlucky individuals and couples to torture and kill.

It was a double life Keyes had led up until his capture in 2012; an elaborate ruse he "enjoyed" immensely within which he was able to make every state in the Union his hunting ground, and every kind of American citizen his game.

And in his capacity as a self-styled, roving serial murderer, Keyes was to be indiscriminate; he killed females, he killed males, he killed the old and the young.

Madness to his methods

Although Keyes was classified as an 'organized' serial murderer for his coolheaded, coldblooded criminology, at the time he was apprehended by authorities he was already descending into killer chaos of the “disorganized” variety: Targeting pairs and couples for prey, and breaking his own rules in obtaining these hard-to-get victims by killing on his home turf, using his own vehicle, and stealing victims’ credit cards to fund his adventures and travels.

This is how he got himself snared, fortunately, and it’s not that uncommon either—crafty Ted Bundy’s mental faculties also rapidly deteriorated toward the end, until he was killing solely by maniacal compulsion and leaving at his crime scenes a long and bloody trail.

Bundy too had started spilling the beans while he was incarcerated and facing death in the electric chair, and it’s believed that he did, by his last breath, tell investigators everything. More or less without the kind of exaggerations that some of his ilk are wont to do once they’re thrust into the spotlight.

Israel Keyes studied up on the likes of Bundy, he told his interrogators, but he also made it very clear to them that he was nobody’s copycat.

The chilling kills he did admit to doing show such boasts might just be true.

However, Keyes did not tell all before he expired, and, rest assured, those awful murders which he did confess to committing were not the embellished accounts or fabrications of a delusional madman perversely seeking adulation. Each and every one of these have so far been corroborated in follow ups by police. Right down to the minutest detail.

But there’s much more that Keyes had alluded to in his final days, and he was ever so slowly revealing the course of these hellish journeys and acts he undertook, before his cowardly end left investigators hanging.

So the FBI is now urgently requesting the public’s assistance in solving the half-told horrors Israel Keyes committed as he drove and flew from state to state, deliberately targeting remote areas such as campsites, boat launches, and parks to lurk in and kill.

An urgent appeal from the FBI:

"Mary Rook, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the state of Alaska, requests the public’s assistance in developing information concerning the travels of suspected serial killer Israel Keyes, deceased, in order to identify additional victims. Anyone with information concerning Keyes is encouraged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

"Based upon investigation conducted following his arrest in March 2012, Israel Keyes is believed to have committed multiple kidnappings and murders across the country between 2001 and March 2012. Keyes lived in Washington from 2001 to March 2007, at which time he moved to Alaska. While living in Alaska, Keyes worked as a general contractor but traveled extensively. In a series of interviews with law enforcement, Keyes described significant planning and preparation for his murders, reflecting a meticulous and organized approach to his crimes. It was not unusual for Keyes to fly into an airport, rent a car, and drive hundreds of miles to his final destination. This was the case in the murder of Bill and Loraine Currier, where Keyes flew into Chicago, rented a car, and drove across several states before arriving in Essex, Vermont. After the murder of the Curriers, Keyes continued his travels on the east coast before returning to Chicago and then to Alaska.

"Keyes admitted responsibility for robbing several banks during this timeframe, two of which investigators have corroborated. Keyes used the proceeds from his bank robberies to pay for his travel, along with money he made as a general contractor. Keyes also admitted traveling to various locations to leave supplies he planned to use in a future crime. Keyes buried caches throughout the United States. The FBI has recovered two caches buried by Keyes—one in Eagle River, Alaska, and one near Blakes Falls Reservoir in New York. The caches contained weapons and other items used to dispose of bodies. Keyes indicated the other caches he buried throughout the U.S. contain weapons, money, and items used to dispose of victims.

“Investigators believe that Keyes did not know any of his victims prior to their abductions. He described several remote locations that he frequented to look for victims—parks, campgrounds, trailheads, cemeteries, boating areas, etc. Keyes also told investigators that prior to the Currier case, his victims’ disappearances received little if any media coverage. Based on his own research, Keyes stated that one of his victims has been recovered but authorities ruled the death accidental. Investigators have not identified this victim or where this crime occurred.

"Keyes admitted to murdering four people in Washington; he killed two people (independent of each other) sometime during 2005 and 2006 and murdered a couple in Washington between 2001 and 2005. It is unknown if these victims were residents of Washington or if they were vacationing in Washington but resided in another state. It is also possible Keyes abducted them from a nearby state and transported them to Washington.

"Additionally, Keyes admitted to investigators that in 2009 he murdered a victim on the east coast and disposed of the body in New York State. Based on Keyes’ statements, investigators believe Keyes abducted the victim from a surrounding state and transported him/her to New York.

"The timeline below is an outline of Keyes’ travels and whereabouts throughout the United States from 2001 to present. Due to Keyes’ pattern of traveling significant distances by car, the locations are grouped by region rather than specific states."

Sailor Drowns on Dry Land

After two long months, Carl Austin Travis has finally been found.

The 22-year-old sailor from the U.S.S. Halliburton was spotted in the Ohio River doing the Dead Man's Float, approximately seven miles south of where he was last seen in Marietta, Ohio.

The banks of the river and the water itself had already been searched before with sonar, probes and tactical divers, and the young man wasn't there.

Travis vanished from his Marietta hotel in the middle of February 2013 while on short leave from the Navy.

He told his family by phone that he was going out for the night with his friends, but was never seen or heard from again.

Murder Weapon in Coed's Slaying: A Bathtub Filled with Water

It has been a longstanding belief, widely held by law enforcement officials as high up as the FBI, that people don't kill people with water. Or they very rarely do, that is....

For months now, authorities have been hinting that pretty coed Julia Niswender was a victim of foul play, while never disclosing what evidence they'd found in the 23-year-old college student's off-campus apartment that supports such a grisly theory.

But at last, in what is bound to become a can of worms for the state of Michigan, where so many youths have been disappearing and drowning of late, police finally announced that the EMU student had been intentionally drowned in her bathtub.

The David Gerken 'Smiley Face' Drowning

It's being hushed up and whitewashed as I speak, but, for all you fellow Smiley Face theorists, the David Gerken drowning in November 2012 behind the Ralph Wilson Stadium in New York, is the one to watch right now.

That's the disappearance and drowning death that could potentially bust THE CASE OF THE DROWNING MEN wide open, I believe.

I've already provided comprehensive coverage of this matter for Crime Magazine where I'm a contributing writer, and since that website has exclusivity to the work in terms of online publication, I'll just provide the link to the article here for any cyber-sleuths who want to investigate all the suspicious events surrounding 26-year-old Gerken's case on their own.

The title of the Gerken exposé is Wrongful Death, or Bloody Murder?  Feel free to share the piece too if you like; I'm pretty sure it can be read in its entirety there without a paid subscription.

Gerken's untimely (and thus far unexplained) demise is what's called "a quiet little murder" but, who knows, maybe the truth can still out before a hefty, hard-to-refuse cash settlement is offered to the family and a gag order puts the facts regarding his killing forever in the dark.

If the truth about it ever does come to light, however, it will very much resemble the same one floating just beneath the murky surface of similar fatalities which have been happening in America's northland these past 15 years. Hundreds of those would have to be revisited and reclassified as homicides as well.

And you'd be stunned to discover then who these 'Smiley Killers' really are.

On that note, Smiley Face victim Walton Matthew Ward's mother will join Killing Killers this week to help shed light on the circumstances of her 23-year-old son's recent drowning in October 2012.

Her name is Julie Kvinge and I've posed her with about three-dozen questions which I think you'll find the answers to quite intriguing.

I've also sent her and her family on a mission to take some pictures of the Indianapolis area that Matt disappeared from, including along the shore of the White River where his body was found on October 24th.

It will be interesting to see if they discover any new graffiti down there...

The Ward interview, along with accompanying photographs, will be posted on this site shortly in the Voices for the Dead section, so look there soon for it.

Thanks for dropping by today--

Police renew search for missing college student

The Search For Colin Gillis Is On Again

With hunting season about to go full speed, New York State Police and officers from the Department of Environmental Conservation in the Tupper Lake region have renewed their efforts to locate the now-19-year-old Colin Gillis, calling on hunters to assist them in finding articles of the young man's clothing, or worse, even his body.

Missing since March of 2012, Gillis was home for spring break and had attended a party with his friends on the evening of March 10th. He is said to have left that event alone on foot in the early morning hours of March 11th and was last sighted by a passing motorist walking along Route 3 in the direction of his family’s nearby Piercefield home.
He never made it there.
The eyewitness, a local newsman driving his elderly mother to her residence in the town of Tupper Lake, had promptly driven to the nearest police station to report that he’d observed a young man (who would later match Gillis’ description) apparently in “distress” and “flailing his arms” to oncoming traffic. Police said they immediately went to the area in question but, by the time they got there, the youth, presumed now to be Gillis, had already vanished.
In the days and weeks following his mysterious disappearance, numerous law enforcement agencies and nearly a 1000 community members searched over 2000 acres of Adirondack woodland as well as all the nearby waterways, but there was no sign of Gillis. There was also no indication anywhere of someone having fallen through the ice and drowning either, by now an established pattern of death in these strange disappearances of college-age men in the I-90 and I-94 corridor, since 1997.
Oddly enough, the only item belonging to Collin Gillis which was recovered in the massive ground and air rescue attempt was his driver's license, clearly indicating that he’d been asked for identification by whomever it was that had stopped him that darkened morning. It’s obvious too that Gillis did in fact produce a picture ID 'on the spot' for the yet unknown subject or subjects involved, because his license was found at the side of the very highway he’d last been observed walking on before he went missing.
Gillis was a pre-med student in his sophomore year at Brockport University and is described as 6’1” tall, 170 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. He was clothed in a black and white striped shirt, blue jeans and red sneakers, and was carrying (or wearing) a reversible black and red L.L. Bean jacket together with an orange and black day pack.
Foul play is strongly suspected in the Gillis disappearance and therefore the official inquiry into it remains active and the search status labeled as “continuous”. This means, in addition to an ongoing but sporadic investigation, exercises and drills are also being routinely conducted in and around the location the victim was last known to have been at between March 10th and March 11th, 2012.
“In the past, we’ve had hunters come across things that have helped us locate people,” DEC spokesperson David Winchell explained last week.

The Gillis family is also offering a substantial financial reward for their loved one’s return or for information about what may have happened to him. Although heartbroken and worried, they remain optimistic. “We are still hopeful and we await Colin's arrival every day," his brother Lyndon recently stated.
With late autumn baring the trees and a wider range of visibility as a result, it is hoped that savvy outdoorsman may more easily spy something of interest as they prowl the woods for game this season.
Anybody who does come across such items, or who has any information at all concerning the Collin Gillis case, is asked to contact Ray Brook State Police headquarters at 518-897-2000, or the DEC dispatch at 518-897-1300.

Police seek secondary crime scene in Ridgeway girl's slaying

A search of self-confessed murderer Austin Reed Sigg's Westminster Colorado residence produced the missing parts of Jessica Ridgeway's body, stashed by the killer in a crawlspace beneath his home, but no evidence that her corpse had actually been dismembered in that location.

Investigators have therefore extended their search now to the suspect's father's nearby mansion, hoping to pinpoint the secondary crime scene they know must exist and, possibly, to find more clues and evidence that may link this budding young serial killer to other attempted abductions and/or homicides in the area.

Sigg's father, Robert Sigg, a career criminal himself, has a rap sheet about a mile long which dates back to the early 80's and includes drug dealing, battery, and fraud. It's not known at this time the true source of his revenue which would facilitate owning and maintaining such a tony address and acreage (shown above), but he recently undertook to remove all of his online business profiles from the web following the news of his son's arrest and confession in the Ridgeway murder.

Robert Sigg (pictured in the above police booking) is allegedly out of the country, but issued  condolences to the Ridgeway family this week in a carefully and eloquently worded statement.

He is divorced from Austin's biological mother Mindy, but took both on an impromptu luxury vacation in the Virgin Islands shortly after the unsuccessful attempted abduction of a female jogger in the park across the street from the Sigg's Westminster home in May 2012. Austin Sigg has confessed to that assault as well and his DNA was matched to the Ridgeway girl's slaying from evidence taken at that time.

When informed of these developments, authorities in the Virgin Islands expressed grave concerns about the case and are currently in the process of reviewing their missing person reports during the timeframe that Austin Sigg, and convicted felon Robert Sigg and his ex-wife, were *vacationing* in their country.

Of the threesome, only Mindy Sigg has no police record of any kind, as it has just been learned that Austin Sigg had at least one mark on his record prior to being apprehended this month for abduction and murder. Because he is a minor, that matter was brought in the juvenile justice system and, at the date of this writing, remains sealed and a mystery.

Austin Siggs was also reprimanded and treated for a pornography addiction. He was only 15-years-old at the time of this offense. A family member with knowledge of these charges made the following remarks, on condition of anonymity:

“We heard that he was in counseling over issues related to the family breaking up--you know, Rob was in and out of prison sort of thing--but while Mindy kept telling everyone she was told this kind of phase of wearing black,  being holed up in his room playing video games, and charging porn movies on her accounts was normal for a teenage boy,  we had discussed someone taking the lead and mentioning we thought Austin did not seem “normal” for as long as I could remember.  But then he had a girlfriend for a while and he seemed to sort of snap out of it.
"The last thing I remember was that they had gone to some formal and the next thing we knew Austin was pulled out of school and in intensive therapy for a pornographic addiction, so I don’t know if that is what broke the kids up, or what.   Mindy had it rough with the two boys on her own. She put herself through that school in Denver on her own dime while Rob got locked up at about the same time.  I think the kids were probably very much on their own and by the time Austin started having really big issues, it may have been too late obviously.
"We still don’t know how he [Rob Sigg] comes out of prison and paid off over $140K in fines while Mindy was forced to file bankruptcy this summer. I tried to look up Rob’s stuff on the internet, but a bunch of the files from his criminal case are still sealed.”
Austin Sigg was studying mortuary science and crime scene investigation at Arapahoe Community College at the time of his arrest. His father, Robert Sigg, is not as yet a suspected accomplice in the Jessica Ridgeway killing, but sources indicate that his activities are necessarily being scrutinized now too, considering his own criminal background and the serious nature of the crimes his son has planned and orchestrated.

Full coverage of the Sigg serial abductions and slayings will be posted here soon

Find a Fiend

JUSTICE FOR JESSICA
ten-year-old Jessica Ridgeway
was abducted on her way to school,
killed, dismembered, and dumped

Mental health experts estimate that approximately one per hundred individuals worldwide are psychopathic. One percent doesn’t seem that big a deal in the scheme of things, of course, but it’s still not a number to scoff at since these individuals manage to perpetrate a whopping 30% of all violent crimes committed annually and constitute more than 25% of the prison population.
Predominately male, psychopaths come from every walk of life--every ethnic, every race, every nationality--and their inherited tendencies toward remorselessness and a lack of empathy makes them toxic people to know, whether or not they ever engage in acts of violence.
Thankfully, statistics show that most psychopaths are not usually dangerous individuals. These more benign types exist day to day in a “sub-criminal” state of mind, infecting and disaffecting all they meet with their unabashed selfishness, their compulsive lying and boasting, and their guiltless pursuit of pleasure and gain at other people’s expense. In short, though this aberrant majority may stop shy of actually plotting and executing criminal offenses, they still live at all times on the very edge of civility.
When a psychopath does fall over that precipice, however, when his motives and impulses become uncontrollable and reach far beyond the bounds of civilization, he becomes a serious threat to society.
Life-threatening.
The demented psycho who, for a thrill kill, abducted and murdered 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway this October, and then dumped parts of her mutilated body in garbage bags a few miles from her Colorado home, is still at large in the area and, undoubtedly, has killed before and will kill again.
In fact, investigators have just confirmed that DNA lifted from the victim’s remains and from various items uncovered at the crime scene directly link this madman to at least two prior foiled abductions of young women who were jogging in the park right across from Jessica’s house.
And, to make matters worse for the terrified community this vivacious schoolgirl once lived in, profilers suggest that it’s very likely the murderer is not a complete stranger, but rather someone who resides and/or works in the neighborhood.
That assertion would be consistent then with national homicide stats which reveal that, in over 85% of all murders, the victims are somehow acquainted with or even related to their killers.
The only good news in this tragic and frightening affair, is that dozens of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies are on the Ridgeway case, relentlessly striving to identify Jessica’s sadistic killer before he can strike again. Police know by the magnitude of this slaying that he’s on a spree, so time is of the essence in apprehending him.
With that aim, they are actively seeking assistance from the public in deciphering clues recently collected. Of specific interest to them at this time is a small wooden cross that may have been a pendant to a necklace, and which was recovered in the open field near where Jessica’s body parts were found. Some telltale grocer receipts were discovered near that site too, evidence which has additionally helped to narrow the focus of the search for a perpetrator.
As well, officials are also asking neighbors to maintain a state of vigilance now and to report any suspicious behavior of colleagues, coworkers, family members, or friends, particularly on the morning of Jessica’s abduction and during the days immediately following it. They say conduct that ought to send up red flags would be any or all of the following:
1. A person suddenly missing work or appointments, with or without a plausible excuse;
2. Making dramatic changes in their personal appearance;
3. Making alterations to their vehicle;
4. Escalating the use of alcohol or other substances;
5. Packing up and leaving town without notice;
6. Having an obsessive interest in media coverage of the case, possibly coupled with an extreme unwillingness to discuss the murder whenever the subject is raised.
Additional details concerning a potential suspect profile have also been furnished in the past few days. Investigators believe that the individual in question is a short Caucasian male between 18 and 40 years of age, and so profoundly disturbed that his psychological issues would be hard to disguise, in general, and well known to those who see him on a regular basis. There is also a good chance that the man is unattractive and unkempt, expert profilers say, two physical characteristics allegedly quite common to this class of serial offender.

Police affirmed just yesterday that Jessica’s schoolbag, located in an adjacent city almost a week after the child’s disappearance, contained her clothes, and was planted there by the killer both as a taunt and as a decoy intended to lead them away from his trail. This further underscores their working theory that the perp is a resident of Jessica Ridgeway’s hometown and may even live within walking distance from her home.
With Halloween looming at month’s end, and the prospect of children en masse trick-or-treating in a municipality where a vicious and opportunistic murderer is on the loose searching for easy prey, there is a growing sense of urgency by law enforcement personnel to solve the Ridgeway abduction and slaying as quickly as possible. They have been following through on literally thousands of leads in the case and are asking for more public help of this nature.
Jessica’s killer originally tried to abduct grown females for his victims, but, when those attempts proved unsuccessful, he switched to younger targets. This is a grim reminder that, as adults become increasingly more prudent and cautious in order to avoid becoming victims of crime, children are made all the more vulnerable to those whose deviance knows no limits and whose bloodlust can never be quenched.
But, despite Hollywood’s penchant for portraying these ruthless predators as omnipotent, they are not brilliant and invincible. The murderer of young Jessica Ridgeway may delude himself into thinking he’s as evil a genius as the fictitious Hannible “the cannibal” Lecter, but he is terribly mistaken in that belief, and has made some serious mistakes along the way, too. Yes, apparently his DNA does not match any currently on file in the nation’s sex-offender databases, but that’s not a real obstacle to catching him. Rest assured, this sick creep can and will be brought to justice soon.

Who do you believe the Long Island Serial Killer is?

When a high-profile series of murders go suddenly cold, public speculation and finger pointing can start to run rampant.

Such is the case with the Long Island serial killings, uncovered at Gilgo Beach in 2010 after a bizarre 911 call from a Craigslist call-girl named Shannon Gilbert led to her subsequent disappearance, a fumbled search, and her weird drowning.

The discovery of Gilbert's body and, with it, a dozen other similar victims, was a pretty hot story then, but it's one that has since begun to languish in the media as the Suffolk County Police Department remains either tight-lipped about the matter or utterly disinterested in apprehending a perp (or perps), for fear it's somebody they might know.

Nevertheless, the $25,000 reward SCPD is offering for information leading to the arrest of the "unsub" (Unknown Suspect) still stands...

No takers as yet, but, really, who is murdering prostitutes in the New York City district and then dumping their bodies in the remote, swampy regions of Long Island?

Is it, as rumored in the press, a local police surgeon with unsavory connections and questionable predilections? Or, perhaps, a rabidly misogynistic out-of-towner vacationing on Gilgo in the summer months? Or even a pair of former NYPD detectives with a hater agenda and really bad attitudes about women?

Or is it someone else completely?

Well, whoever this fiendish slayer is, they've got a pretty good knowledge of police forensics, apparently, and a rather pronounced and passionate dislike for workers in the sex trade, evidently.

Killing season upon us...once again

Summer is officially over, and yet that's when the dubious drownings start up again--all young men, all mysteriously disappearing, all matching a strikingly similar description--as has been the case now since 1997.

Add the Boston Architectural grad student Jonathon Dailey, 23, to the growing list of 2012's victims. He disappeared on October 2d and was found in the Charles River by a Boston University rowing coach on October 9th 2012.

Will the police insist his drowning too is "accidental" which has become the norm for them in regard to these peculiar deaths? Well, that might be kind of difficult this time since Dailey's body was discovered with a chain wrapped around it and anchored to a cinder block. But...

"It is far too early to make a determination as to manner of death, and reports indicating that the individual was the victim of a homicide are premature," said Jake Wark, spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney.

Just a couple weeks before Jonathon Dailey went missing in Massachusetts, 18-year-old pre med student, Harsha Maddula, likewise disappeared after becoming separated from his friends sometime around midnight. An undergrad at Chicago's illustrious Northwestern University, Madulla's corpse was found by a local fisherman on September 27th, floating near a harbor in Wilmette, Illinois.

The cause of his death is still being determined and toxicology tests may take weeks to process as well. However, Wilmette police investigators have expressed their opinion anyway, despite not being in possession of all the facts yet. "There were no signs of foul play on the body," they said.

Also consistent with a troubling pattern in the drowning men phenomena, rescue divers had already thoroughly searched the area Maddula was ultimately found in. So perhaps it's time law enforcement officials just admit that DISAPPEARING AND DROWNING OFF SEASON is unto itself a sign of foul play, and then truly begin to give this perplexing matter their undivided attention.

Or else call in the FBI...again.

No justice for Seth Bishop

Once again the Butcher of Braintree, Amy Bishop, has gotten away with murder, even though now a lifer in an Alabama prison after she pled guilty last month to the 2010 Huntsville campus massacre and avoided execution.

Following her sentencing of life without parole in Huntsville, officials in Braintree Massachusetts announced this week they will not seek to prosecute her for intentionally killing her 18-year-old brother, Seth, in December of 1986.

Bishop, then 20, had as well fled the murder scene with the still loaded shotgun in her possession and attempted to carjack a local business with it. Thereafter, she actively resisted arrest and was being booked by officers on suspicion of murder when her well-connected mother intervened to stop it.

All records of the Braintree incident then mysteriously "disappeared" and it was not until Bishop went on a rampage in 2010, gunning down three of her fellow biology professors and injuring three others, that the shooting death of her brother was revisited. She was then indicted in Massachusetts for homicide and expected to stand trial there once the trial in Alabama had ended.

But, “we will not move to have her returned to Massachusetts,’’ Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey has decided. “The penalty we would seek for a first-degree murder conviction is already in place."

Oh, yes, it's a can of worms all right, Mr. Morrissey--exposing the high level cover up of Seth Bishop's murder--but so what? The young man still requires and deserves justice after all these years. And those who aided and abetted his killer on that day, who helped set Amy Bishop free to kill again without so much as a spot on her record, should be tried and sentenced now as well.

Justice can never be served in some secondhand, roundabout way.
